You look at this and say to yourself "Stupid bastards should have used a trebuchet!" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41282726/ns/world_news-americas/

Pfft. I dispute your illicit transborder drug-catapulting credentials, sir. Mobility is key. Plus can you imagine being the poor sap charged with catching a metric tonne of yayo out of the stratosphere? I bet I eat these words next week when they do build a trebuchet. Or a howitzer.

I am waiting for some of the open source UAV plans to be co-opted into drug smuggling drones. Or even better - open source semiautonomous oceanic probes.

Interesting. But would toys like that ever trump the cost/reward ratio of crazy guys in go-fast boats, or the bodily cavities of some desperately poor drug mule who'll risk imprisonment or death for a piddling few dollars? The economics of drug trafficking are very intriguing as it's the low-tech methods that always seem to win out and populate the market. When traffickers scale up and get technological, they always get busted. To wit: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/07/03/ecuador.drug.submarine/...

If you had not mentioned Bigfoot (the DEA's internal designator of the stealth diesel-powered submarines some of the drug cartels are using to smuggle drugs) I would have said 'maybe'. The drug cartels have shown themselves to use whatever tactics and make whatever monetary investments necessary to continue turning a profit.

I would like to point out that the Bigfoot subs were rumors for nearly a decade before any LEOs even got photographic evidence of their existence. I think it would be more accurate to say that some traffickers will eventually get busted, regardless of the methods used.
