1st Annual SCARAB Gaming Convention - Columbia, SC, January 14th - 16th
Just posting here to let folks know that I'm planning on running a handful of Eclipse Phase adventures at SCARAB, which is held in Columbia, SC. I'm wanting to drum up more buzz about Eclipse Phase, and I figure that running adventures at a gaming convention is a great way to get the word out and introduce potential new players to the setting. I'm planning on burning copies of the main book PDF onto CDs to hand out to players and telling them about the game's Creative Commons license in hopes it will engender further good will towards the players and encourage them to support the game if they decide they like it. If anybody is in the Columbia, SC area during that weekend and would be interested in playing some Eclipse Phase, I'm sure there will be spaces open. Also, if anybody has any constructive ideas as to how else I could promote Eclipse Phase at the convention, feel free to share them. I'm basically wanting to make a good impression for the game and the line at this convention so that it'll create more excitement and word of mouth. You can visit http://www.s-c-a-r-a-b.com/ for more information about the convention.

Re: 1st Annual SCARAB Gaming Convention - Columbia, SC, ...
Just thought I would give an update on how Eclipse Phase at SCARAB turned out. SCARAB went magnificently. This year was SCARAB's first but the turnout was way beyond expectations. We had people travel from all over the region to show up, and the convention area was packed. Friday and Saturday night I looked around and saw people crowded around nearly every table playing games. Due to some scheduling hiccups I ended up running Eclipse Phase out of my proper times, but I still had a good group. My players basically demanded I run all three of my adventures for them so they could get the entire plot. One of my players was famous fantasy illustrator Mark Poole (if you are into World of Warcraft or old school Magic: the Gathering, you have probably seen some of his art.) Whereas you can measure player bodycounts in D&D or Shadowrun in the couple of dozens on a good day, my players were proud of the fact that they managed to get a bodycount of around 15,000 (a Scum Barge with an out-of-control and active Exsurgent infection on board is a nasty, nasty thing.) Of course ICly the players were fairly tormented by what they were forced to do, more so by the fact that they egocasted backups off the ship prior to blowing it up because they knew they weren't going to make it off alive. When reinstated they KNEW they had done it, but not how. One of my players compared it to blacking out from an alcohol binge and then killing somebody with your car. You knew that you were responsible but not the specifics. All you had was guilt to carry around. In all the party was wiped out twice but in the end they succeeded in their mission, and backups made before the final mission were reinstated and told to go on home. One of my players compared it to an "awesome, bad-assed movie [he] got to play in," that he was going to tell all of his friends about. I caught the eye of some non-players, who (along with my group) were given PDFs of the core rules so they could spread the word after reading the game on their own. Some vendors who were at the convention saw the enthusiasm surrounding the game and expressed an interest in carrying Eclipse Phase products in their stores. I fully plan on running at SCARAB again next year since I felt the turnout and interest was great. I'm proud to be carrying the Eclipse Phase torch, and plan to do so well into the future.

Did this convention go well enough to run again next year? I live in the upstate of SC but had no idea this was even going on! I would like to attend next year. Glad things went well.

Will you by any chance be posting the adventure you ran? Because I wouldn't mind running it for my play group.

Re: 1st Annual SCARAB Gaming Convention - Columbia, SC, ...
I did "borrow" bits and pieces from here in there in other modules, but I did try to come up with a flowing adventure that took place in several different places without being too contrived. I'll polish the adventure up a bit and then try to put it up somewhere for hosting. I tend to do things sorta off-the-cuff and improvise, so my outlines tend to be rather loose. Otherwise I don't have a problem sharing the adventures. The adventure has three parts to it, each of which is run in a standard four-hour convention block. A dedicated group could bang through it in about nine hours total if they kept the momentum going (which mine did at SCARAB.) If you have a different group playing in each session the times will probably run longer (since you have initial game mechanic discussions and charsheet overviews, among other things.) The adventures are designed so that a player who plays in all three sessions will get the entire plot, but somebody who jumps in for one adventure but can't make the others still gets a bit of the game and has a definitive resolution for the scene. That is, if somebody can make session one, two, or three but not the others, he will still feel like he did a little something. In any case, give me a few days to a week and I'll try to polish the sessions up so that they are a bit less personalized and junky and more for public consumption. :) Edit for mic106: SCARAB, last I heard, had around 200 attendants. While that isn't much compared to something like GenCon or DragonCon, for a gaming convention in South Carolina it's a pretty good bit. The buzz and energy there the entire time was pretty good. Except for some pretty minor hitches, it was a successful first year for SCARAB. If you didn't make it down from the upstate, I fully encourage you to check SCARAB out in 2012. :)
