Fur Coats
I thought the potential of fur coats (pg 330) wasn't quite maxed out, so I happily made my own for fun, and since they turned out so well, here they are! They are essentially packages of enhancements/items I thought were useful together at bargain prices with some fluff thrown in. -Somatek Fur Coat concepts- Roc: Made from the genes of various birds and some artificial sequences to fit the bill, this full-body suit grants the wearer flight. The Roc fur coat comes with a secondskin-like full-body underwear which is meant to be the only clothing worn beneath the fur coat (armor 1/3). The boots of the coat have three claws facing forward and one backward, imitating bird feet. The coat covers the whole person's body in feathers for warmth all the way up to the neck. A 'cape' of feathers is attached to the back, and when inactivated it covers the person's arms and reaches down to their ankles. The front of the 'cape' can open, allowing the wearer to move their arms freely. When the 'cape' is activated, it seals to the person's arms and splits in two, giving them large wings. A hood can be added to the coat as well if wanted, increasing the aerodynamic nature of the Roc. The feathers of the fur coat can be ordered to go flat or perk up, or even flap slightly, allowing the wearer to cool off. The Roc increases the wearer's ability to jump (times 2), gives them claws on their feet, and allows them to glide or fly (8/40) in almost any atmosphere. The coat gives the wearer the skill of flight at 40. [upper end of Moderate] Safari: This fur coat is made from the cheetah's genetic code and from other feline, canine, and equine bits. It is a full-body suit but leaves the head bare. The fur coat brings the wearer onto all fours, and the 'gloves' and 'boots' are cat-like pads with retractable claws. It also gives the wearer fur and a tail. The tail can be controlled using wireless mesh controls. The coat's legs and arms are packed with lean muscle, enhancing the wearer's speed on all fours making it equal to that of a cheetah's. The Safari fur coat is energy intensive and requires re-charging quicker than other fur coats by Somatek, needing more energy after only fifteen minutes of running at full speed. Small battery-packs can increase functional time at another fifteen minutes per pack. Those morphs with eelware bioware increase the functional time indefinitely, although after a full day of use they will be abnormally tired and require rest (see WARNINGS section for more details). The Safari fur coat increases running capabilities (8/35), and jumping capabilities (times 2), and gives the wearer claws on all four appendages. [mid range moderate] Sleuth: This fur coat is made from the genes of a chameleon, a gecko, and several night predators such as a wolf, and includes extensive human-made gene sequences. It covers a person head to toe. The skin of the coat can change color in light spectrums from ultraviolet to infrared, allowing camouflage in that range. The coat has eyes that provide 360 degrees of vision in spectrums from infrared to ultraviolet. The Sleuth silences the footsteps of the wearer and has grip pads that allow the wearer to effortlessly scale walls and ceilings. Its instincts help the wearer sneak as well (infiltration: 40). [upper range moderate] Diver: This wet-suit like fur coat uses seal, whale, and dolphin genes as well as some fish genes. It encases the wearer in a seal shaped coat that sticks the wearer's legs together into a single tail. It has flippers controlled by wireless mesh controls, and it pins the wear's arms against their side. The head piece includes eyes that can see underwater and sonar. The fur coat can be shaped to look like several real or imaginary underwater creatures, most common being a seal or a water-dragon. The Diver provides the wearer protection from hostile underwater conditions from extreme cold to extreme pressure. It also helps them swim (swimming: 40). [upper range moderate] Sage: The Sage fur coat uses a wide span of natural and artificial genes, only the slightest majority coming from primates. It is shaped like a jump suit and ends halfway down the wearer's hips and upper arms. It is covered in short fur and has a tail controlled by wireless mesh controls that is shaped like a monkey's tail. The sage is used for integration with common forest habitats. The original design was made custom for a brinker group in the outer system who owned a large habitat shaped to imitate the forest in which the human species was thought to have evolved in. The Sage has a neurological connection to its wearer through their spine and releases pheromones to affect the wearer as well. It induces strange behavior that imitates a wild animal. Those experimenting with bioware have found that the Sage allows them to view humanity in a new fashion, giving the fur coat the name Sage. Its main effect is that it induces artificial avatism in the wearer, making them act and think like a monkey. (Disorder: Avatism, climbing: 40, freerunning: 40) [upper range moderate; restricted in most inner system habitats] Wildcat: The Wildcat fur coat is mostly made from artificial gene sequences, with feline aspects thrown in. It is shaped like a dress with pant legs made of fine cat-fur. The tactile senses of the coat are highly sensitive and are transmitted to the wearer. The coat picks up pheromone levels and can analyze the mood of a biomorph; it is particularly accurate when touching the biomorph by analyzing its heart beat and temperature (+10 (not touching)/+30 (touching) Kinesics). The Wildcat releases pheromones and other seductive chemicals at the wearer's command (+30 persuasion of a sexual nature or when trying to affect a person's mood). It enhances the female sexual instincts as well, making it Somatek's most popular fur coat (Art: erotic entertainment 40). [mid range moderate] Packmembur: This fur coat uses canine gene sequences and a vast array of insect gene sequences, with artificial sequences used mostly just to connect the two. The fur coat is shaped like a hoodie and is skin-tight except on the hood, which can be put back. Packmembur is fur coat that enhances social capabilities, particularly with others wearing Packmembur fur coats. It gives the wearer enhanced smell, allowing them to sense other's mood's with greater ease. When activated, the suit uses pheromones to advertise the wearer's current mood, giving other Packmembur wearer's extra information (+30 to Kinesics tests by other people with enhanced smell). It also links the wearer to a unique radio channel (a biological adaption used by insect hives). All wearers of the Packmembur fur coat within a five mile radius can connect to each other on this radio frequency, sharing thoughts and moods on a unique level of intimacy. Since each Packmembur can carry the message of another and pass it on, the effective range of the radio is greatly increased in areas where there are many Packmembur wearers. [lower range moderate] Camper: Polar bear genes and a variety of artificial sequences are responsible for the popular Camper fur coat. This bulky full-body coat has a hood and tough boots, and the gloves have claws that can be used for climbing and digging. It enhances the wearer's strength (+10 modifier to strength base tests) and when sealed (see-though patches allow vision even when the hood shuts) protects them from harsh environments, including open air on both Mars, Luna, and even Earth if one could go back. In cases where the environment is too extreme (a storm) or the wearer is too exhausted, the Camper doubles as a tent. It seals completely and expands and forces the wearer into a fetal position. It drugs the wearer and sends them into a catatonic state where they use far less resources and can survive at a lower body temperature. The coat's fatty membrane feeds the wearer through an IV and can keep the wearer alive in a harsh storm on Mars for up to three months. An automated beacon embedded in the fur coat sends emergency signals in a five hundred mile radius. (all enhancements as described) [upper range moderate] Notouch: The Notouch coat is a personal bodyguard. Using porcupine and electric eel genes as well as some insect genes and artificial mixes it can protect the wearer. It has two parts: a robe worn about the shoulders and a pair of arm-sleeves. The robe is covered in four to five inch long porcupine spines that can be accurately launched up to ten yards from the coat with a simple command from the wearer (Ammo 50, 1d10 +5 DV -1 AP). The Notouch can also release an airborne chemical that induces fear (Flight), aiding the protection of the wearer. The sleeves and the robe can deliver a powerful electric shock on command as well. The robe and sleeves become entirely transparent at the wearer's whim, making them disappear to any spectrum except radar/lidar. The arm sleeves can also sprout claws from the wrist that can deal significant damage (cyber claws). [upper range moderate] Aegis: Somatek's most simple yet most expensive fur coat design is based off of rhino, crocodile, and turtle gene sequences. It covers the wearer in heavy, spiny, reflective plates of armor at no negative affects to the wearer's mobility, because built in muscles take care of the extra weight and provide heavier punches (14/12 armor, 1d10/2 DV when wearer successfully grapples a target, +1d10 -2AP unarmed strike, provides minimal environmental protection and vacuum sealing) [lower range high]

Big problem... human joints can not flex and operate at such speeds as a cheetah can run. The connective tissue and ligaments will fail (and pretty quickly). That's also a reason why fast running suit-type mecha are not really physically feasible... they would tend to rip the wearer apart.

Re: Fur Coats
Fun idea. However, I think the big market is for fur coats that are just fur coats - after all, most clothing has little enhancing functionality and is more about looking and feeling good. Also, a coat that is powerful enough to give bonuses on physical things is going to be fairly heavy/thick, essentially an organic exoskeleton. This also makes people less interested in wearing it socially. So I would imagine all of the above coats existing in a merely cosmetic version with feathers, cheetah skin or even apparent turtle hide, but with little effect.

Re: Fur Coats
In our game, there is an exoplanet colony on a frozen ice-world (100m crust, liquid core), in which the major export was a specialized transgenic furcoat derived from local fauna. It was designed to include both chromatophores and photophores, which were controlled by the wearer's mesh inserts. Net result: pretty glowing fur coat, that you can probably use as a vidscreen, if you should so choose.

Re: Fur Coats
Actually, I think that fur coats are likely less common in this future... more often used when people don't have access to the latest nanomaterials, and instead used cloned animal hairs for their needs. However, with new materials, people may have suits that are skin-tight, are worn under your normal clothes as underwear, and work under similar principles as, say, the Dewar flask to protect you from the elements. Furthermore, they might have computerized capabilities for temperature control, releasing heat when your body is over your comfortable limits and absorbing ambient heat when it dips below those same limits. The fur that is there is likely purely aesthetic.
