Ethnic music in Eclipse Phase
For general purpose music there's already a good thread, but do you know any good ethnic music track? I'm trying to set up a small repertoire of musics that are in the EP style, or appropriate for an EP game, yet gives a clear ethnic atmosphere. To be used when the player enter a strong ethnic oriented habitat for example; it helps immediately set-up an atmosphere. I was thinking about this for a week, but came up short... Japanese: the obvious Ghost in the Shell and Akira soundtracks (some tracks, not all of course) Arabic: Black Hawk Down soundtrack (same; and yes I know that Mogadishu is an east Africa capital, but it also has been a Arab League member for 40 years and the tracks are more Arabic than old traditional Somalian) Latino: the Esperandote track of the first Silent Hill soundtrack, somewhat Any other ideas?

Just dont use the Main Theme, its Breton :P (Variant of, erm, Gaelic?). A lot of Hans Zimmers stuff can be used, the Last Samurai OST for example.

I always associate the Scum barges with the Roma, so either Gogol Bordello for the 'ups' or Goran Bregovic for the 'downs'. I'd toss in some Desmond Dekker in there too, although I couldn't tell you why. For the Mercurials... Freddie Mercury :)

For Japanese: Modern Taiko is amazing. It's a style of drumming that's become very popular recently. It's been used in all sorts of places, even US TV (Track down "Storming New Caprica" from Battlestar Galatica, while not a pure Taiko track, the drumming and song composition has solid Taiko roots). Also it's wordless so there are no lyrics to date it and reproducing a drum beat, no matter what your situation, is pretty simple so I can see the style surviving the Fall pretty readily.

I forgot the Taiko style, yup its a very good idea thanks. A few musicians or albums you would try first? As for other ethnicity (I'm trying to find suitable ambiance and music for each one still present), any ideas? I know I can't think of one for French (I'm pretty sure it's not possible, there's no really French theme or traditional music that could be reinterpreted in a modern/electronic style, although being French it's more difficult to find one, as I'm sure a native Japanese would find GitS). Any ideas for the other ? Chinese, Hindi, Russian, Mexican, Brazilian, Spain? Or the more minor one, like Bengali, Persian, Javanese, Korean, Polish, Punjab, Turkish, Vietnamese, Urdu and so on?

For Taiko I'd recommend Kodo. For others I'd say skip the soundtracks and go straight to the sources. French? Try French Hip hop/rap. Interesting stuff. Don't forget that "ethnic" music composes traditional as well as modern styles. I.e. I have some great egyptian techno.

You may also check out the Yoshida Brothers, their fusion of traditional Japanese shamisen music with international musical styles seems somewhat appropriate for Eclipse Phase. Also, if you're looking to find something that will approximate the sound of "modern" folk in Eclipse Phase, your best bet is probably to look at electronic, techno and other heavily digital musical styles. In a world where scarcity is still an issue in terms of raw material and space, physical instruments (which take up not-inconsiderable amounts of space) are going to be luxury items, and a ethnic music styles are going to adapt to digitization out of simple expediency (it's easier for someone to access their endo and a suite of high quality open source music programs than it is for them to get the fab access, raw materials and storage space necessary for an instrument). Today, we already have a lot of international music - particularly in Japan, the Arabic-speaking world and Western Europe - that combines classical styles with modern digital production techniques, while I don't have any bands on hand at the moment, I'd say your best bet is to start there.

In my "Build of a nation" campaign, dealing with the attempt to reboot Tanzania at Saturn, I use Baba Yetu from the Civilization 4 soundtrack (Swahili text, very upbeat and epic "let's build!" feeling), Oh Africa (the theme from the South African football cup), a mix of traditional songs and modern African hiphop.

When you consider that simulspaces can perfectly mimic reality, you wouldn't need physical instruments, just a VR program to jump into.
