Nomadic habitat or grand gathering?
After reading a bit on the festival of the goat thread, I had a idea of a scum nomadic fleet of ships that on special occasions gather and temporarily merge into one. And then separate after their buisness of the meet is done. Be it for reasons for competion, festival, council or tradition. Perhaps the participants doesn't "merely" dock with each other, instead they act as parts to create a greater living space. For example the ships act as the supporting structure (like poles in a a tent) with some reusable material as its "tent" draping. The material for the draping might be simple water (ice) On a tangent is that these participants could also link up their on-board ships computers & or other brought hardware; to form a really powerful supercomputer. Nice idea. Water makes a lousy draping since it is brittle - crash goes the space when a drunken partygoer bumps into it. But weaving a cheap, transparent nanofabric and blowing up an inflatable meeting space sounds quite doable. You will want to do it in the outer system rather than the inner due to radiation and heating issues, and you shouldn't park the 'hot' (radioactive) ends of your spacecraft inside. So I envision a big transparent spherical globe with various spacecraft sticking through the surface, radiators and engines on the outside, crew quarters on the inside (some have to make do with flexible connector tubes).

Why would they do this? This sounds like a good way of getting a disaster. Remember: concentrated computing power = TITANS.

True but I can see theses "fairs" as great opportunities to trade computerized information like new petal "seeds", skillsofts, freeware or cracked nanofabricator blueprints, homemade infosec software and exploit programs (I don't care if it's not Cognite! It's made with love!) I'm not advocating connecting everybody together but it does make a good opportunity for a great big data mash up. And remember kids, connect rhymes with infect!

Yes, but none of this requires supercomputers! This is just normal mesh networking, it will happen once the devices get close enough. You might want to set up the "fair server", but it is little more than a shared AR. And really sensitive software trading can be done untraceably by hand, simply by exchanging storage media.

Oh, I had the false impression that ice was a good material for space construction and that there existed some ice crystal formations that were robust. Several meters of "printed" ice as a hull ? No? Ok then. Whatever the cheap (or reusable) material used is -doesn't matter , what matters is that it can act as a reliable hull. If Ice cant fulfil the brief its off the table.

Nods.

Thats actually what i initially envisioned too. I also had a idea of some quite gatherings camouflaged so that they from the outside look like a "generic" boring asteroid/comet. If only visually. Another gathering might look like a ship graveyard haystack. A clankers gathering might look like a wreck cloud. I lack a good term though to use on the nomads "habitat"/gathering/festival/Lanparty/Demoparty.. The marrockan "Moussem" perhaps or "Kurultai" from the Mongolian language. or Demoscene

Even mere Suspicion of it, would prospect sentinels to investigate. Lazy GM idea to create a travel need for Firewall sentinels -I know. Then again some people seek disaster, Perhaps Its a community of singularity seekers? seeking to fight fire with fire but decided to lay low and under the radar. Singularity seekers need supercomputers and drunk festivals too. But it could also be a confusion of the term, and the simple "fair server" is to these scum nomads a supercomputer, requiring customs & near religious rituals for safety and tradition. "you call this a supercomputer?"

Well, make a fibre-ice composite and you will be good. But you won't get much of a view (but if you do it in the inner system the light shining through the translucent surface is going to be pretty grand - and now you have a neat radiation shield).

They are going to have plenty of terms. I quite like Kurultai.

Good idea. "Bring Your Own Singularity Seed" Hmm, I guess they never listened to the advice of bringing about seed AGIs while drunk? It is a nice little scenario - sentinels trying to figure out where the singularity seekers are going to bring their ships to try to get their own godlet in secret. An apotheosis party.

Sounds an awful lot like DefCon. ;)

A very nice idea. Or a flash mob supercomputer gets invaded by a hacker AGI who decides to take advantage of all the computing power...

That is a nice trick. Hmm, suppose the AGI adds some slightly open interfaces and excessive computing power to a popular consumer product blueprint, like some smart sneakers. When a flash mob appears it will have plenty of power - and since the sneakers do link closely to the body area network (to "provide optimal massage pleasure") it can also hack the user egos. Apropos flash mob Seed AGIs, remember 3340 in Karl Schroeder's "Lady of Mazes". One can implement AGI in odd media.

root@Nomadic habitat or grand gathering
That would be grand fun. A fairy market transiently assembled where all things can be bartered. Add a space pirate, a star, and three witches, and we're at Startdust in Spaaaace! Which sounds like fun all around.

This gave me the image a moon-sized Kurultai made by a writhing mass of slitheroids, now inside performing a mating ball orgy. Travellers beware
