Doctor's Surgery
Hey guys, I've been inspired enough by Eclipse Phase to throw together some short fiction based upon my character. I've not read much transhumanist fiction before so apologies if any of the topics involved are old news. Let me know what you think, I'll upload more if/when I do them.

[EDIT: I should add a NSFW tag to this I guess, gratuitous swearing]

A very good seed. A little bit more length and polish and you'll have a rock solid short story. You bring the obvious question (that nobody seems brave enough to ask) about personality gender identity and resleeving into a morph of the opposite gender. What I wonder is if Bull will eventually become 'acclimated' to the idea of being biologically female time simply because 'his' brain chemistry, biochemistry, and endocrine system are all female. The female Fury body presumably reacts positively to males, so would Bull's thoughts processes eventually fall into that rhythm? Could a morph be genetically engineered to be attracted to the same sex, thus allowing an Ego of the opposite sex inhabiting it to be less stress? These are the questions transhumanity presents us with.

Re: Doctor's Surgery
From real life examples, I cannot for my life remember the guys name, but I'd say that gender is something hardcoded into us. We can have stronger or weaker harcoding, and we can have psychological reasons to be more dependant on the gender of our choice. This guy was born male, had a circumsition performed on him that went wrong, the doctors recommended them to acclimate him as a girl and have further surgery towards that end. The parents agreed and he took his life with a shotgun at 20+. He had lived a few years as a boy prior to that, and even had a girlfriend. On the other side on the spectra we have girls and boys wanting to be the other gender, I've talked with people with this issue over the internet, and most of them has said that they were born with their desire to become the other gender. Or that they discovered it once they started to realise that boys and girls are different. Moreover, it seems psychiatric help to cure gender dysmorphia is not possible or atleast not very effective. It can however help a person to cope with the problem, if their dysphoria is of the mild variant. I do believe our sexual identity is hardcoded too, post-op transexuals (or rather, former transexuals) seems to not change their sexual preferences. And since they do eat a lot of hormones and/or retard their natural hormone production they should, if hormones/gender identity were the cause of sexuality, have a change of heart. Furthermore, attempts to cure homosexuality have mostly been unsucessful as far as I know. I remember reading a article about a "cured" homosexual running a camp to cure other homosexuals. The article was about him purchasing services from male prostitutes. This is ofcourse my own thoughts about this subject, and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt. Or preferably, with a jar of salt.

Interesting comments! From what I understand, such research has been carried out suggests that sexuality is encoded in the brain's structure itself, and might relate to hormone conditions in the womb during foetal development. Whether someone is attracted to males or females might therefore be completely irrelevant to their own hormones but rather be defined by their brain's structure (or virtualised structure in the case of synthetic minds). Whether mental gender is similar I do not know, but it seems somewhat likely to me. I know I'd be very uncomfortable to be sleeved in a morph of the opposite sex and it would be a priority to purchase a switch.

Or that they discovered it once they started to realise that boys and girls are different. I think that 'sex' makes more sense as a term here than 'gender'. It has been said that sex refers to a body's physical characteristics and gender refers to how a particular person identifies (i.e., 'male', 'female', 'bi-gendered', 'androgynous', or something else). The number of post-operative transgender people who change their sexual orientation is small but they are out there. <posting_mode("genderqueer", 0);> <posting_mode("ep_normal", 1);>

<posting_mode("ep_normal", 0);> <posting_mode("genderqueer", 1);> I'm not sure that I should comment or not on whether or not sexuality is hardcoded into the structure of the brain itself. That is a matter of no small controversy in the LGBT community. While there is evidence to suggest this, there are also people out there for whom sexual attraction is not a matter of being attracted to males/females/some subset or variant therof but a sexual attraction based upon intellect and the manner in which they think of someone rather than how they feel about someone. Gender is just as wiggy a topic because sombunall people are uncomfortable with the notion that attraction to someone of a particular sex or presentation can be due to one's experiences or contemplation of sex and/or gender and coming to an informed decision (for some value of 'informed'). Personally speaking, I'd be dropping the extra credit on the sex switch modification of my biomorph, with a little extra to add a call to the pseudo-random number generator in my mesh inserts. <posting_mode("genderqueer", 0);> <posting_mode("ep_normal", 1);>
