The Red Race of Mars aka, the Martian Grand Prix
The Martian Grand Prix is an annual event that’s a combination car race, fashion show & demolition derby. Held to coincide with the Valles Marineris Auto Show, this four day road race across the Martian desert show off the pinnacle of ground-craft & morph design, each of the major hypercorps sponsors a vehicle & driver for the race, but other factions such as the Barsoomians, Mercurials, Lunar-LaGrange Alliance, Extropia & the Morningstar Constellation have entered their own race teams. The drivers of these races are celebrities, daredevils, & test pilots showcasing exotic morphs, the XP of the races are always hot-sellers. All vehicles have some means of navigating the hostile Martian terrain, be it low-altitude flight capabilities, leg walkers, or smart wheels. Martian terrain is dangerous, but often no more than the driver at your rear. Sponsors will build weapon systems into the ground-craft for a little roadside “industrial sabotage” & entertainment value. Since loss of life is insured by the driver’s sponsors, outright violence is common; very few of the vehicles make it to the finish line. Given the high clout of sponsors & interest groups involved the grand prize can be anything from a handsome credit reward to a parliamentary seat on the Planetary Congress. Criticism of the race planners has increased in the weeks leading up to the race as it was noticed that each year the track keeps gradually shifting ever closer to the TITAN quarantine zone. Just a little adventure I thought would be cool, inspired by Speed Racer, Death Race 2000 (the original) & this trailer for an anime called Redline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAZSF7LPo_8 anyone else got any neat ideas for how to flesh this out

What route would the race take? It seems plausible that it would start in Marineris, getting into the Xanthe/Margaritifer outflow channels. That is a great place to test performance in both silty and chaotic terrain. Next leg would be up to Elysium, going through the much more hilly Terra Arabia until Isidis and Hyblachus. Look out for landslides. Then there is the Elysium - Olympus leg, which brings it close to the TQZ. Rather flat polar plains, but there could be melted zones. The final leg is likely across the Tharsis plateau - flat, fast and with extreme environmental conditions. The slightest accident and you are dead. Hmm. That might take more than 4 days for wheeled vehicles. Maybe the actual route is just part of this (selected differently each year) and the vehicles that cross the finish line are airlifted to the next start point. The inter-leg participant parties in Elysium and Olympus are infamous, of course.

root@Martian Grand Prix Google Earth has a Google Mars. The new version of the system allows users to create and share layers. Someone could draw up the MGP map and distribute it here.

Very cool idea. I'm working on writing up something similar for Venus, in the way of a jet race in the Venusian atmosphere. But that's a much more high-society, controlled "Formula One"-style race, where this Martian version reminds me of rally races.

I really like this. It's the kind of event that makes better verisimilitude and could be used for something that's either adventure-centric (the players actually have an impact on the race either as participants or pit crews or trying to stop sabotage.) or as something in the background (a news update about the race, people wagering, odds quotes about the race from Extropian gambling dens.)

My DM actually included this in our adventure. We were trying to find out if a certain person should be killed or not and tracked him to the race. We actually entered the race in an attempt to locate him. really fun

That is a pretty good idea. For some reason, I keep thinking of 'Top Gear 3000', as well with this idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQCOQIn1iBc&feature=related Especially the ending you get when you finish in Hard mode-which is a cliffhanger in which you get abducted. Now, think of this... what if every once in a while the winners of the Grand Prix are kidnapped and then forcefully put through Psychosurgery (or even worse, just Forked (Delta or Gamma-class forking) to be sold as top-tier defensive drivers for anybody who can pay the price. (This is not done on EVERY race, because else it would be pretty hard to cover up, and still the luxuries of the first prize attract a lot of participants-but it has become an urban legend that getting to that finish line in first place might be a fate worse than death).
