Help me 'pimp' my drawing.
So I started drawing again and I've got one that is near finished but it's just not EP enough for me. This is supposed to be a Barsoomian insurgeant in a ruster morph in a habitat on mars fighting with someone. I'm just running out of ideas of how to say that visually. How do you make a ruster besides giving him red skin? I need more elements that say this is a drawing about Eclipse Phase. Ideas and also more general criticism would be apriciated. http://onetrikpony.deviantart.com/ My own comments: I think the cliffs outside the windows are distracting. I'll probbly drop the saturation a bit and blurr them out. I'll probably also shade in a glass effect to separate the interior from the exterior. I really need some more detail in the structure but I'm not sure what that would be. I plan to clean up my line work on the figure a bit and complete the color and shadeing on the gear. What else does this picture need? Thanks

A human body is just a human body. But you can make it more EP by completing the drawing with more EP-like elements. For example, it seems like it is taken from his objective's pov, so include the tactical network overlaid (maybe it could mention it is a Ruster morph in the enemy's analysis?), publicity, etc. Then, as for the character, his equipment seems "too modern". Meaning, now-days. I'd go for more integreted objects in his dress (whatever is hanging on his right side, could well be introduced into his clothing), maybe some show of technology or energy on it. And, maybe even some show that it is intelligent clothing (maybe changing colors?). Of course, this would probably mean re-doing what you have, so it may not be worth it. Finally, on a technical level (and I'm a terrible drawer, so do know that I comment them on the deepest of my recognition to someone that draws way, way better than me), I think you'd need to rework both arms and knees. Arms are too mucled for my liking, exaggerated (something common in Marvel and DC, for example), and knees... well, they just don't seem to be knees. Just a patch placed on the middle of the legs. Hope I don't bother you, do ignore me if you like . :)

Its good, but for some reason the perspective seems off. It looks like he is floating above the background and not really in it. It looks like he is leaning away from the target instead of towards it. Also remember that Mars is not actually that red. It is more a dusty brown colour. I do not believe we actually have any properly colour balanced pictures from Mars so as far as I am aware we are unsure what it would look like to our eyes, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mars_Viking_11h016.png is a faily good picture from the Viking mission. P.S, good hands. I could never draw hands.

Criticism is difficult. I really appreciate all comments. You're right about the knees I was getting a little board with the line work and let it slide. I wanted them to be square patches part of the pants but I got tired. I'm also trying to portray 'snow pants' something like the cold weather gear ruster's wear outside. I might switch the colors around and make it active cammo bleeding from the 'outdoors mars' pattern to the indoors urban pattern. I think you're right about the level of the technology I've drawn. I'm really running out of ideas there. I think the point of EP tech is that it's so integrated and efficient that it fades into the background, which doesn't leave me much to draw. Did you get a look at the pistols? They're basically just rough copies of my CZ and my Steyr. I couldn't think of any way to update them besides leaving the ejection ports out, (caseless ammo) and sling some gun cams in front of the trigger guards. Marvel comics is definitely my style. I honestly don't know how to draw a human in normal proportion. I know that doesn't fit EP very well which is why I'm trying to learn to include other things that do hint at the setting. Thanks for the help.

Oh my god, those ARMS. You could say he's just got a big SOM score, or even make them cyber. You could maybe also add some more obvious implants and say he's scum instead/as well as Barsoomian.

I would not use a green shirt, it makes it look more like a 21century person, same if the shirt was camoflage too. metalic, brown, white or dark would be perhaps be better. Or much more complex patterns and diffusions. As for the gear, it should be camouflage too, like current day military gear.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I've got an idea; Smart material clothes = Automatic pockets, holsters, everything can be integrated into the clothing and reconfigured. I'll be working on this over the weekend. Thanks :D

Another thing to consider is that thus far, all the clear pics of Rusters we've seen have featured brown or green camouflage-like striations on their skin. Check EP pg. 133, and the resleeved Gavin Gladwell in "Mind the WMD". Colin

I though the striations were nano-tatoos?

I think a case could be made that they are, but honestly I think that the Rusters tend to look better with them either way. It adds some contrast on a colour that tends to blur together into a mass quite easily.

Re: Help me 'pimp' my drawing.
Good points about the color contrast skin marking or tatoos! That's why I origionally chose to color him with a green undershirt. I figure mars is redish green might be a comfortable color to the martian psyche. My thoughts are that Ruster's are red because it's a by-product of their built in radiation resistance, (necessary on a planet with no magnetosphere) Now I'm thinking that the green marks are tatoos and that green works well because it's an atractive color to martians and because if you have a tatt, you want it to stand out against skintone. I'm going to expand that to say in my EP that ruster tatts especially on rednecks and barsoomians have significant social meaning and are usually 'Clan' tattoos. This is going to be cool I've never really drawn tattoos on a figure. Now I get to make up a whole batch of clan tattoos. :D

Re: Help me 'pimp' my drawing.
maybe the tats are green because they're made of nano-polymerized chlorophyle that provide them with extra oxygen that would explain why they don't need the mask to breath. the tatoos are the "mask"
