My character want to have a portable VR simulspace as part of his personal network. Is this just a case of buying a server? Do I also need a firewall? Software?
Also, could this be an implant or would I need to carry it round - and how big would it be?
Thanks

Re: Portable VR Server
The Game Info heavily suggests that they are not really all that portable, most definitely not the sort of thing you get implanted. If I was your GM I would allow it, but I would make the server bulky as hell, and not something that you could easily carry around, especially during any kind of Firewall mission. If I had my camera nearby I could take a picture of my desktop case, which is about the size and weight I like to imagine the most portable EP Server would be. Instead, a linky with a picture:
http://www.smalllinks.com/O2X - Picture with a size comparison of a child. Its steel, so its heavy as hell. I can hardly lift mine without waddling along at a snails pace.
As for Game Information. For a portable server (I.e one the size and weight of that case) I would say it would be an Expensive (30,000+) purchase. It would function the same way as any other Mesh Device, except with a +10 Hardware bonus and the ability to host multiple Egos and Simulspace. For a non portable server (I.e one the size of a current day, big case type deal) I would say it would be an Expensive purchase, with a +20 Hardware bonus. Same deal as the portable.

Re: Portable VR Server
Considering that an ecto is the size of a credit card, in our game a smallish server is the size of a briefcase - 50cm x 35cm x 10cm - and about 10 Kg in weight. Portable, but somewhat cumbersome and hard to conceal even from a cursory examination. It can run 1000 egos in a normal-time simulspace, or up to 100 with 60x time contraction. Anything considerably larger than this is military grade hardware, seriously restricted because of the potential for hosting seed AIs.
Its cost is Expensive. This the server's AI, security/networking software and administration tools, and the basic simulspace libraries. Specialized simulspaces are costly pieces of software, from High to Expensive and upwards.

Re: Portable VR Server
I think the server is more appropriate for *big* and detailed multiuser virtual worlds, while single-person or a few user environments can be run on a small (possibly implanted) device. It is all a matter of having less bandwidth, processing and graphics. If you just want to have a pleasant virtual villa with garden just for you, there is no need for a suitcase-sized device.

Re: Portable VR Server
why not simply use a VPN to run the VR you need? that way, a simple ecto would suffice as a router.
Nowaday a VPN router is about the side of a big modem/DSL TV decoder, so imagine what size it has 150 years from now.
