Good, flexible starting locations?
Where should one start a new EP campaign? This is a very vague question, and the answer is obviously "it depends". Let me try and sharpen it. Suppose I'm starting a campaign, and I'm not 100% sure of a specific plotline I want to pursue - from TITAN horrors to politics, from black ops to scientific research to gatecrashing. In the same vein I want to allow the players as much freedom as possible in making their characters - history, faction, motivations etc. What are the most *flexible* starting locations? Note that physical location does count. It's the place where characters will keep their primary morph, and where the majority of their interests will lie. While egocasting is often (but not always) possible, short range physical travel is less expensive and does not involve the hassles of finding a new morph and resleeving. For similar reasons, there tends to be more interaction between habitats within range of easy physical travel. First of all, I'd rule out most of the system from Uranus outwards. The population is too sparse and distances are too large to allow for physical travel between any two different locations of this area in reasonable time, and individual locations tend to each have a very, very narrow focus. Saturn offers a large palette of habitats and factions (and *the* Pandora Gate!). Jupiter less so. One should keep in mind that physical travel between the moons and L1 objects of either of these two planets is easy (we are talking of a few million kilometers), so any campaign based "on Jupiter" can have the characters easily hopping from one moon to another. L2-L5 objects, and in particular Trojans and Greeks, are another matter entirely - their distances from the respective planet are of the same order as those to the Inner system. The asteroid belt is more problematic. True, there's a lot of diversity, but it's scattered over a circular strip that is not only over a billion kilometers long, but that's also over 1 AU (the sun-earth distance, approx. 150 million km) wide. So any campaign based "in the asteroid belt" is really based on a single asteroid. On the other hand, a scum barge *may* find an orbit running counter to that of at least half the asteroids and allowing it to hop from one habitat to another (staying in contact with each for a handful of days at most) over the course of a few years. This would certainly be an interesting campaign mode, with a series of relatively unrelated adventures each taking place in a new habitat, a few weeks to a few months from each other. Mars is probably, in my opinion, the best starting location. With almost a quarter of transhumanity, a large habitable surface, a really large variety of factions and habitats, TITANs, and a Pandora gate, it offers a ton of diversity and options. And, in a pinch, it's only 5 months by gravity shuttle to Earth Orbit (or less than a week by ultra-fast courier)! Earth Orbit, including Luna, has fewer options than Mars, though still quite a few. Venus, Mercury, and close Sun Orbit have progressively fewer. Summarizing, as a flexible campaign base my first vote would go to Mars. Saturn would rank second. And possibly the main belt on a "counter-asteroid-wise" scum barge would be my third choice. Though I may be biased by the fact that I have Sunward, and no "Starward" is out yet. What about you?

Re: Good, flexible starting locations?
Personally what seems like a really great place to start an EP campaign is the asteroid belt, especially Extropia. Why, because of the fact that it's basically lawless makes for tons of adventure possibilities possible. Everything is possible in Extropia and everything can go wrong. It's heaven and hell all wrapped into one. Basically there is so much of everything that anyone could have a reason to go to Extropia. And once there you get the protection you pay for and what you brought with you... that's pretty much it! So just that is an adventure seed. "Hey buddy I'm setting up a meet with a guy I don't trust, can you ride shotgun?" "But I don't even know how to shoot!" "Meh, they don't know that, just stand there and look intimidating!" Another reason for Extropia being great is that's it's right smack in the middle of the Autonomists and the PC. Exiles from both of these places must flock here! You want to have a shoot out begin over Open source Vs DRM, that's the place to do it! Scum barges must stop there all the time and it has to be such a great grey/black market! I picture it as this cutthroat wonderland where you can buy or get anything you want for the right service. I bet there's Shadowrun like fixers all over the place who make a fortune from simply saying "I know a guy that knows a guy!" Add space pirates and bounty (ego) hunters, infugees that have escaped from their indentures, drug lords and black marketeers looking for mules, gangs looking to run protection rackets and what you got is Mos Eisley on crack!

Re: Good, flexible starting locations?
I am very fond of Saturn as a starting location. Most of the characters in my game appeared on Titan or Phelan's, and have moved between different moons and habitats. Many parts are rather civilized, but there is enough weirdness to intrigue anybody. Extropia is useful because of its dynamism and complexity. It is the New York of the solar system.

I agree that mars has the most opertunity for adventure variety. You've got both Anarchist and PC factions. TITAN threats, Political intrigue, Insurgeant resistance forces, major ecconomic factions in competition Earth would be my second choice. It's got all of the above minus the Gate and, by my count; 21 listed habitats all accessable within 14 hours physical travel spread between the earth, moon, L4, L5.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

Re: Good, flexible starting locations?
Mars probably is indeed the most flexible of all locations, as it has enough people and places you can run most every game. Problem with Mars is that it is a Hypercorp world, which means it leans more to usual economy, and laws and view of the universe. It is more "common" and gives less novelty to what you can find in EP and, as such, gives less originality to the game. I went for the belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is true places are afar there, but you can always egocast. And stations are on the brink between the normal capitalist economy of the inner system and the reputation one of the outer, so you can play both. I went on and created my own station (Ra) which was acompanied by Isis and Horus which mined the needed ressources for Ra. But if you want an official location, I'd choose Extropia: the social anarchy built there is very flexible, offers tons of opportunities, and is something most players won't find in any other game, thus giving it that originality Mars lacks.

Re: Good, flexible starting locations?
Ultimately it comes down to the kind of setting for your games you want to engage in. Both Mars and Extropia are good places-but both are very different in the atmosphere of gameplay-Mars gives you a flexible setting for games like Blade Runner, Cyberpunk, Red Mars with occassional AI invasion threat themes. Extropia is more of a Space Exploration, Posthuman theme, with Alien Contact and possible Exo-worlds scouting involved. Luna-Earth Orbit system gives you a flexible setting for noir settings on Luna(detective work without lots of guns), post-apocalypse horror(Earth Orbitals, TITANs on Luna), and some corporate wars setting, thrown with usual independence movement themes. Of course this is general take on things, you could probably throw in a lot of more, and they are some common traits(TITAN threat, Corps) more or less accented. I would say that Mars is the best setting for new players-familiar background, with enough exotic things to have them learn about EP, without being thrown into deep water. Extropia/Outer System is very, very interesting but requires experienced and knowledgeable players, and of course a very good GM. I would go thus for Mars as a starter.

Re: Good, flexible starting locations?
root@Good, flexible starting locations [hr] Scum barges are a great place to start, as they can be floating anywhere. If you start out in some sort of scum barge circus like the Carnival of the Goat, you have an excuse to be anywhere, an excuse for any number of factions to be on your ass for violating local laws, and you have a floating society of merchants, freaks, criminals, visionaries and the insane to have all sorts of fun with. Also, any scum barge with a decent reputation can maintain offices at any port of call where they keep q-bit reservoirs that are entangled with q-bits they keep on board, making the scum barge an excellent router for private communications across the system. The way I've set up the Carnival of the Goat, it has a "below decks" area that is your traditional hive of scum and villainy, where the dead bodies get collected in the morning and spaced (cortical stacks are long gone), and an "above decks" where oligarchs keep their time-share egocast vacation morphs. The rich make sure they get backup insurance before showing up, because the decadence and violence are just part of the charm. They also egocast in when the Carnival of the Goat pulls into a port of call, so they can go and experience the exciting vacation location while having a place to egocast out of if they start getting in trouble with the local law. So much fun.
