Chat Noir
Chat Noir is probably a major cultural center in the outer system, a bastion of anarchism, and a home to the Fissure Gate and the Love & Rage Collective. But what is the habitat actually like? I am having a hard time grokking it as a setting. What's the feel of it as it were? Any one have any thoughts on this or stuff prepared for their own games? Have you used it as a setting for your games?

And more to yr questions, I haven't run people through that gate yet but if I did I'd probably run it like Deadwood under a dome in a frozen canyon with gatecrashers replacing prospectors. Remember too that there's a lot of engineers and scientists, as well as a lot of collectives excited to be at the beginning of a frontier outpost to other stars. The spaceport is mentioned as being small still but planned to be expanded upon, which requires the work collectives to execute the build orders as well as the NASA types for the details, so more are coming all the time no doubt. Probably makes for an interesting nightlife alongside the 'crasher one. I'm also willing to bet there's some fun gaps in the sousveillance given the in-progress nature of the place for the time being. There's probably certain criminal elements who know that as the public eye's presence becomes both sharper focused and closer to omnipresence (as is wont to happen in anarchist habs) they are playing a dangerous game of chicken with the ever-expanding limits of Chat Noir's collective perception...which probably includes some of the larger scale "get stuff through the gate and off Oberon" operations which are going to get increasingly more difficult as time goes on. Smugglers who don't give two shits about their rep on this be-gate'd rock since their presence is on a timer might even try riskier nonsense than usual, whereas those fully willing to eventually humble their business model and build a name might be of a different sort (black market/red market distinctions might apply roughly along that divide too, two different smuggler subcultures sorted depending on ruthlessness/quick big money vs reputation/face). Just some ideas from reading the Gatecrashing stuff over again.

Ooh, interesting, the idea of two types of exo-artifact smugglers competing against each other, clash of philosophies. I am unfamiliar with Deadwood as a franchise beyond that one mean guy who apparently swears creatively. I just finished Seveneves so the idea of space hab living with engineers scraping by makes some sense, the "we'll build it as we need it."

Old West vibe
I've thought about Chat Noir a bit, too. Also got a bit of an Old West vibe (haven't seen Deadwood, either, but I gather it's about a rough mining boom town in 19th Century South Dakota). I attempted to GM a PBP game years ago set there. Here's a bit of flavor I wrote:

According to the skies above the icy crevasses around Chat Noir, it is late afternoon. The Sun hangs low in the sky, noticeably dimmer for anyone used to observing the Sun from the Inner System; but still bright enough to be trivially easy to distinguish from any other star in the sky (lacking any atmosphere, non-Solar stars are visible even during the Oberonian day). Above and to the side of the Sun hangs a crescent Uranus, several times more broad than a crescent Luna from Earth (if you had ever happened to be on Earth pre-Fall), a dark blue object crossed by the dimly glinting line of Uranus's ring system. Sunset is still a few (Earth) years away, after which Chat Noir will have a 42-year-long night due to the extreme axial tilt of the Uranian system. The settlement of Chat Noir itself is constructed mostly underground, a series of warrens using the icy surface to shield against ionizing radiation. Oberon is not a very large object by astronomy standards, having only 1/30th the gravity of Earth. The locals like to joke about it being a "minigravity" environment: a lot of the architecture takes its cues from microgravity space stations in orbit or deep space; except there is a tiny but noticeable "up" and "down" here. On a more (trans)human level, the general feel of Chat Noir is that of a small 20th Century college town (raucous parties crossed with the various academic/scientific sorts who come to study the gate or the worlds beyond the gate), crossed with a 19th Century American mining boom town (though with less avarice and violence); all topped off with a dash of paranoia as everyone is worried if/when the Planetary Consortium will next try to attack.

After some time mesh browsing, you decide to head out for a bit, and pick up some gear. You realize your concern about "illegal" gear is somewhat silly: this is an Autonomist base, and basically carrying anything short of a nuke is okay. In fact, the Old West feel is heightened by the fact that people are regularly carrying around at least hand guns: a lot of Gate Crashers worried about what might be on the other side after they jump through. There are even a fair amount of people carrying more intimidating weapons: rifles, grenades, seeker pods. A lot of these people are probably part of the local militia, geared up in case the Planetary Consortium tries anything.
Part of the issue with these autonomists settlements is that I'm never sure what the feel of the place is--I hear people cite 1930s Catalonia, or Christiania, or Burning Man, or whatever, but I've never actually been to any of these places, and there are all sorts of reasons Chat Noir or Locus would be different (no corncopia machines in Catalonia, Christiania's on Earth, etc). Well, I guess that's a basic challenge of sci-fi, haha: imagining things that don't actually exist.

Physically, it's probably
Physically, it's probably like any other dome city on an airless ice/rockball. Reasonably-well planned out, most of the architecture is a chaotic mix of prefab/cheap-build and whatever-the-guy-controlling-the-bots-feels-like, but all likely designed to be easy for AR artists to build on top of. It being a gate hub means it's also an oddity for anarchist habs in being designed as a fortress. It's well-defended, doubly so given the close proximity to Xiphos (possibly bolstered by Ultimate defectors/washouts?). As for what an anarchist habitat looks like, I see it being a curious blend of two extremes. On one hand, the physical construction is both distinctive and economical -- even with nanofabrication, you're essentially building a colony with limited resources and a for-the-people mentality. On the other, what any habitat looks like depends on what AR skins a person has applied, and the avilability of those depends on numerous factors. Most AR skins are probably done by extrapolating algorithm in other habitats, but in a habitat that prides itself on its homegrown artistry (which Chat Noir may or may not fit, depending on your setting), there's a prestige in having a skin whose artist painstakingly sculpted based on what's physically there. So skinless, Chat Noir is probably very economically cubic in design, the better to accomodate expressive AR and make best use of the limited local resources. It's time-expensive to spin up fancier molecules and designs, after all. As for what buildings are likely there, you'd not do wrong to include a lot of meeting halls, pubs, coffee houses, and whatever 22nd century equivalents you can dream up. Anarchism thrives on group meetings of all sorts, so a lot of buildings are community-focused. This far out, actual food/drinkstuff establishment may be somewhat limited, but even someone sleeved in a synth can appreciate a nice atmosphere to shoot the shit with friends in. The Love and Rage collective, by default, has to be somewhat militarized, so you'll see checkpoints the closer you get to the actual gate. It might be open to all in theory, but they haven't gotten this far by openly trusting everyone. The professionalism/quality of this largely volunteer security force is up to you, depending on what serves your campaign best, but bear in mind that with anarchists, you will have a [em]volunteer[/em] security force. Meaning that the extremes will fall more on the fanatic zeal spectrum rather than the corrupt and bribable spectrum, if you're looking to differentiate the anarchists from the hypercorps. Honestly, a small cult worshiping the gate and offering its members as holy guardians isn't exactly far fetched, and if they follow the protocol, who cares what they believe, right? Never forget that Love and Rage are, ultimately, defending their gate. No one is forgetting what happened on Mars or Eris, and I have to imagine that enough expats from Eris settled here that you'd have a hard-bitten brand of anarchism that swings almost to the political right, holding up Love and Rage as the proper establishment. That's obviously fertile ground for conflict in a setting, but physically, that means a lot of combat morphs at these checkpoints, sleeved by egos itching for anyone even close to resembling Go Nin or any other hypercorp. Close relationships with Illmarien also mean a lot of exotic morphs all around.

Huh. Getting slightly off
Huh. Getting slightly off-topic with this, but given AR sensory overlays...imagine how fucking complicated and subjective food taste has become. Like, there would be dishes you can [em]only[/em] taste a certain way in certain locations due to their AR skins interacting with what's physically there. Actually, that would likely be one major counter to being able to print whatever food you want: half the taste is in the AR skin, which can be locked down. And, well, with biomods and all, taste, smell, and texture really do determine just about everything that matters for food now.

Wait, how do AR skins, which I thought were primarily audio-visual oriented, interact with taste? Is there an olfactory AR layer? I mean, I don't see why not I guess since all AR is ran through basic mesh inserts and digitized data into the brain-bits, just never thought about it. Though the Spex equivalent, some sort of nose plug and tongue pad, for Flats and non-meshed individuals would certainly be weird looking.

"Most users perceive data
"Most users perceive data from the mesh as augmented reality—information overlaid on the user’s physical senses. For example, computer-generated graphics will appear as translucent images, icons, or text in the user’s field of vision. While visual AR data—called entoptic data—is the most common, other senses may also be used. AR input includes acoustic sounds and voices, odors, tastes, and even tactile sensations. This sensory data is high-resolution and seemingly “real,” though it is usually presented as something ghostly or otherwise artificial so as not to be confused with real-world interactions (and also to meet safety regulations)." ( https://eclipse-phase.wikispaces.com/Interfacing_+AR+VR%2C+and+XP ) As I understand it, basic biomods and the brain computer basically let all your sensory inputs be modified, filtered, etc. See also XPs, etc. Though yes, the spex version for flats would be AV-only, I'd imagine, unless you want to wear a full-head version.

Somehow I'd never seen the other 3/5 senses covered and assumed it was A/V only as well! More ways to basilisk hack! Also, I'm quite sure taste/smell AR templates are a hot commodity everywhere the primary food source is maker-extruded foodstock gunk. I'd love for characters to be walking around on an anarchist hab and have a player be like, "I look for anyone with their @-rep public and high." and someone with 90 @-rep, after a little Research or Investigation, turns out to be an AR programmer with an online "store" where you can just log in and download tens of thousands of templates for free with new updates every day. If I was on an anarchist hab, I'd upvote their @-rep every time I shoveled something into my mouth and it didn't taste like the same thing as yesterday.

Been thinking of some
Been thinking of some material for Chat Noir since this thread started. Here are a few of the ideas that I feel are good enough to share. Judging from the art on Pg. 63 of Gatecrashing, Chat Noir consists of four standard autonomist Large(1km) domes and a number of smaller surface domes over a network of underground passages and chambers. The Four main domes : The GateHouse : Placed on top of the 500 meter deep conical pit excavated over the pandora gate chamber, the GateHouse is the staging area for all those wishing to use the gate. It’s many floors contain all the warehouses, labs, medical facilities, and fabricators for any equipment needed by gatecrashers at any stage of their journey. The lower levels are reserved for the security of the gate, both from external forces and threats originating from the gate itself. On the Main floor, at the widest part of the dome, crasher teams engage in final preparations for taking one of the two large cargo elevators down the sloping sides of the pit to the Gate Room . Four other elevators serve the remainder of the facility
Spoiler: Highlight to view
For the pit I’ve had the Mir mine in Russia in mind https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&... . It’s about the right size dimensions-wise just covered over with a dome and a bunch of floors in between. The elevators are inspired by Metal Gear Solid https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&... -this was the best I could find, sorry
Residential Dome: The place of residence for many of the 8,000 permanent residents of Chat Noir. Most of the domed space is empty, reserved as open park space for colonists psychological health, with a simulated sky projected onto the solid surface - all Chat Noir’s domes are opaque, since the sun will set soon for 40 years there’s little point in an outside view! The lower levels about 50 meters below the surface and consist largely of personal accommodations of the inhabitants with the occasional food and supply center for personal needs. Scattered throughout the colony are secure armories of prefabbed heavy weapons. Most autonomists have personal firearms for occasional protection, though as a community they’re rarely needed. For colony level threats everyone who is able proceeds to the nearest Armory and within minutes is ready for combat. AgriDome 1 “Hanging Gardens” : The first of the Agridomes is where much of the life support of Chat Noir takes place. Nicknamed “The Hanging Gardens” for it’s use of floor to ceiling cables to support additional plant beds. The high density farmspace inside the dome allows for personal farming projects of rare crops like coffee and cacao, as well as the barley and hops needed for the craft breweries in Enemy Mine. A few small scale livestock and aquaculture farms occupy the lower levels . AgriDome 2 “GravShack” : Planned to provide adequate redundancy for the life support systems of the colony, when Dome 1 proved more capable than anticipated the dome was available for an alternate purpose. Within the dome space itself there are more hanging gardens to provide sufficient backup to the first dome, the subsurface levels are occupied by a nested carrousel spun to provide gravity acclimatization for outgoing gatecrashers. Most crashers reside here until it’s their time to travel. This is also where biomorphs are grown for resleeving unfortunate crashers and shipment to Cobweb. Smaller domes : Enemy Mine : Built from an alien Bernal Sphere found abandoned in an otherwise unremarkable system. This 200m dome near the residential dome has become the premiere bar/brewery in the system. The lower levels are dedicated to the many brewing tanks individuals have fabricated to ferment their individual mixes. The Saloon occupies the midsection of the sphere with large spaces for entertainment, games, and food. The upper levels are sleeping quarters for patrons to sleep off the time spent below. Power Plant: Located a short distance from the main grouping of domes and buried under the ice for safety, the main fusion plants supply power to the rest of the city. Deuterium harvesters pipe in fuel mined from ice all around the moon. Pnyx : The community center of the city. Used as a gathering point for major decision-making and judicial matters. During downtime, the amphitheatre is used for stage and cinema shows with the programmable matter stage area able to adapt to each productions requirements. SkyPort : A small but bustling spaceport equipped with facilities for both LOTV operations and rocket sled traffic from Cobweb and the ice mines. A collective of military spacecraft enthusiasts called The Cat’s Claws maintains a fleet of defense drones and AKVs as part of the defense grid . Future Construction : With the long winter approaching there’s discussion of construction of a facility on the future dayside of Oberon. The project, tentatively called Chat Blanc, is currently surveying locations and accepting preliminary design suggestions.
