Backup for a flat?
If I'm not mistaken, the jovian spy sample character comes with backup insurance, but doesn't have a cortical stack. How's that work?

Re: Backup for a flat?
You can also make backups with an ego bridge, though I think that counts as Advanced Nanotech. (That is, it's my personal opinion; the technical definition of Advanced Nanotech is the category on p328.)

Oh, I think I get it. I'll have to re-read about the ego bridge. So, could the ego bridge then be used to re-sleeve into another flat, or would that need a cortical stack? Thanks for your help!

Re: Backup for a flat?
Most insurance policies require that you leave a copy of your Ego in the archives of your insurance agency, and update this copy regularly (at least every few months). Because of the costs associated with stack retrieval, it is generally this archived copy which is used to restore you, even if you did have a cortical stack at the time of death. Edit: Unless your policy specifies otherwise, you will not receive a replacement morph upon restoration. That said, you can of course arrange to have a spare morph stored away for such an occasion, including a clone of your current morph.

Worst case, your Jovian is reinstantiated as an infomorph, which is better than dying.

Of course, many Jovians would now consider themselves to be dead. "How do you feel, John." "I'm dead. I'm fucking dead!" "You're not. We have restored you from the backup." "Hell no. You have created a copy of John. I have all his memories, all his mannerisms. But I know what I am - a piece of software pretending to be him. And now you expect me to get over it, pretend everything is fine and join you in your shiny soulless posthuman future." "But John..." "DON'T CALL ME JOHN!!!" "...you must admit that you are conscious, that you think, that you feel?" "It doesn't matter that *this* piece of software thinks. John is dead, and *I* am an ugly parody of what he stood for." Might make some interesting characters or NPCs.

Well, yes. But being an e-ghost is still better than dying and *not* being one. :D

John is dead! So he doesn't care. ;) Also, I claim Sim-John as my property. Report for psychosurgery. (Assuming a stupid Jovian has any useful features in the first place.)

Psh. He'd be much more effective without all his silly hangups. At least his infomorph version isn't limited by the cruddy body.

Only because of their drug addictions.
