Advanced nanotechnology
I would like to know something about Specialized Hives (p328) -How long it takes to produce a nanoswarm ? -Where do the implemented nanodisassembler units find raw materials ? Can they recognize the enviroment and get what they need from it ? (assuming they may damage it during the process) -In order to buy a Hive, its assumed to buy the nanoswarm it can produce ? If not, why someone should buy a nanoswarm instead of a Hive that can produce and maintain it ? -Can Spec. Hives be reprogrammed to produce another kind of nanoswarm or they are simply structured to produce only one kind ? Es: i'm in a spaceship, my hive is supposed to be empty and i really need the service of the nanoswarm. So i let Hive collect raw material by disassembling little parts of the ship. I think that from a SPACESHIP (enphasy on spaaaaaaceship) i can easily collect a quantity of 10x10x10 raw material, without probably causing any damage or significantly damage. One player claims that like cornucopia machines need inestimable raw materials to still produce things, i should need too an high amount of material that i cant usually find in enviroments. Of course i cant walk with an asteroid under my arm and i think a normal habitat, vehicle, or device could be partially disassembled to produce the material requested. Last, how many actions or timeframe could the process require to acquire the needed raw material ?

Not too long. I'd imagine that it would take around only 10 minutes to produce an entire functioning swarm.

No. All fabricators have to be loaded with raw materials. You can theoretically produce a swarm that is programmed to bring it raw materials, however.

You have to pay the cost for both the hive and the swarm when purchasing a specialized hive.

No. Only general hives can be reprogrammed

In theory, but you'll have to tear apart the ship yourself (or already have an existing hive that you can program to do it for you).

Likely yes. You have to have viable materials to produce a swarm. If you're stuck in the middle of the ocean, you can't create a swarm out of water. You need the proper metals, plastics and potentially radioactives for your hive to create a swarm from them.

If you have it handy, you can just shove it in the machine. If not, then it depends on the location. It's significantly easier to find water on Enceladus than it is in the Martian wastes, and will therefore take less time.
