My starting adventure
We should begin thinking about the PCs this week and I have a rough draft of the adventure with what I want to introduce the players to Eclipse Phase. I though to share it with you guys in case someone can get ideas for their own games from it. (Mind you this text is very sporadic, coz I mostly have it all just in my head ATM) Firewall has recruited all of the PCs in some form or another to do a job somewhere. I plan to take all of the players for one on one 'interviews' about their characters, but two players have already told what kind of charcters they would like to play. First is a Lost generation guy (I don't know if it will be a male or a female, but I'll just say a guy now) The other player said that he wants to play a doctor of some sort. I was thinking of someone in Menton morph and specialising in psychosurgery, but those are ultimately the player's decisions, of course. So, all of the PCs have been recuited to do a manhunt. Firewall hasn't told much of the specifics to the PCs, but the target of the hunt will be the original of the Lost dude, while the PC is really an Alpha fork. The original has been infected with a strain of exsurgent virus that boosts his psychic powers and he is planning to do some bad guy things (don't know exactly what yet, but something like destroying a hab or something). All of the PCs are egocasted to the site and Firewall provides morphs for them. Because this is an evaluation mission, Firewall decides to throw a slight complication. All of the morphs are slightly sub par. Aging, addicted, lemon, what have you. On site there will be Firewall agents (or 'second-hand-minions') to interview, tempt and evaluate the PCs. Examples will include opportunities to 'spill' something about Firewall in exchange for something, opportunities in indulging in some illegal activities etc. All the while the PCs are evaluated. There probably will be more tailored ideas when the rest of the characters will be finished. At least the doctor type gets a 'gift' from Firewall. A package of chems that has a note saying 'for emergencies'. The package contains a few doses of Inhibitor Psi drug and one dose of Psike-Out. Nothing says 'loyal employee' like an addicted employee ;) Perhaps my version of Firewall might be too 'ends justify the means', but if the PCs will grumble about it at some point, I'll do a sort of internal investigations scenario for them, where their proxy will be changed or something like that, to make Firewall more likeable again. I don't know yet how the original Lost got the exsurgent virus, but it probably should remain a mystery to the players also. The actual mission should be easy enough, but I'm thinking of a scene that triggers the final bits of the adventure. There should be some kind of big happening where there are a lot of people in the same place. Suddenly the Lost (both the PC and the NPC 'feel' each other in the crowd. Eyes lock and probably a chase scene ensues. Outcome is up to the players of course, but if they linger about, I'll give the original Lost a good chance of escaping, so that he'll become a re-occurring villain. Thenagain if the PCs catch up with him, the fight shouldn't be *too* difficult, even if I'd throw out some GM section Psi tricks at the players. The original Lost is just one morph after all. The more important part than getting the bad guy is that the PCs are evalued by Firewall for their performance.

Interesting. Did you play it ? How did it get along ? I may nitpick, but I find it a poor choice from Firewall to send an alpha kill its original, just sayin ;-) Did you consider the original and the fork may try merging ? Becoming a badass psychic with a lot of informations about Firewall...

We played it yesterday. It could have gone better. I was a bit rusty on GMing and many of the players were late. I forgot a lot of rules and found that I'll need to find another way of tracking initiative than this: http://epmuse.farvista.net/combatmanager.php But I think that I managed to get the players stoked about the setting. I'll have to remember to do better in the future though.

Of course that would be true. Only that I could introduce some of the EP signature stuff that way. Also the Rule of Drama always trumps the Rule of Plausibility ;) If someone would have pointed something like that out, I could have just said that perhaps one is one's own best tracker, especially when asyncs are considered.

Merging didn't come to my mind, considering that they would then have to kill the PC too. What I did consider was that they'd imprison the original into a SimulSpace and would send a beta or alpha fork to get whatever information about it it could, return to tell it's findings and be deleted after it. It didn't happen. Because the target was already so deeply infected by the Insurgent virus, finding any useful info would have been difficult at best and risky at worst. I did have some background I was prepared to spill to the players, but I didn't have to coz the first thing they did after digging up the target's cortical stack was to break it with a sledgehammer :D

Re: My starting adventure
Looks like an interresting setup. Have you considered that maybe it's the PC who is the fork, and the hunter the original? being of the Alpha variety, and basically the same person, whom is the original and whom is the fork is ground for debate. Especially if said PC merge with the fork/original. the PC becomes de facto the original Then again, smashing the cortical stack isn't the PC a tad bit suicidal, because it's a reflection of himself that he just smashed (or let it done to him) though if it got the I-virus... that makes sense how Laurens Bancroft of him!
Spoiler: Highlight to view
that's part of the intrigue in Altered Carbon. Meth/Hyperelite gets virus (the Rowling, in the book), and his automatic farcast is about to take place. if infected, he's toast. so he kills himself just before the farcast is done, and an older, clean, backup is resleeved, but with no idea why and if he even killed himself
