Picking up the game again for various reasons and just wanted to make sure I got these right.
A sample character with skillsofts has (40) written on his stat, which I assume means the skillsoft overrides his own skill amount, because no one wants a character with 60+40 in Fray I assume.
Skillsofts say they come in up to 40, and Skillware says it can hold max amount of 100, does this mean than when I buy skillsofts, I can set them to be for example 40, 40, 20 or 35, 35, 30 and so on, switching them on the fly if needed?

Also off topic, I'm trying to find more details on Ionic flight, but all I can find is an older video of a tinfoil 'craft' floating to demonstrate the effect. The fluff says that "the shell is spun for stability", so my question really is: Is it a flashy plasma shell that keeps you afloat and makes you spin round round? Or more like levitation?

You're not the first person
You're not the first person to ask questions about this and probably won't be the last. There have been debates over this. Not everyone is in agreement over how they should work.
I would suggest that you do something simple like having 3 to 5 skillsoft slots. Each slot gives you 40 ranks (overridding existing skills) in the given skill. I set the limit to 40 because that is the limit that AIs have for active skills. I also rule that you can switch skillsofts as a quick action.
Edit: Also I rule that you may only change your skillsofts at the start of your action turn. So if you made a bad choice, you're stuck with it until your next action turn.

Yes it does replace it.
My method for handling it was this: Skillsofts were 1000 credits + 1000 for every 10 points.
So a 10 point skillsoft began at 2k, whereas a 40 point was 5k.
Switching skillsofts I just treated as a task action of 1 minute so that they couldn't be hotswapped in combat
