Hi everyone!
I'm new to Eclipse Phase, have started reading into it a lot and really want to play it. As I'm the only one who's actually read some stuff but have 3 other people who are interested in trying it out this means I will try to find 1-2 sessions worth of time and be GM for the quickstart story. I'm very new to the role of GM but I guess with a premade story as guideline I can do it.
Anyways, thats not the reason for this post even though I'll be grateful for any hints you can give an inexperienced new GM for EP!
The reason is that while playing around with character creation and the setting I had a rough character idea and ran into a question:
The topic in question is XP. The Core Rulebook says that "Every morph with mesh inserts has the capability to transmit or record their experiences, a form of technology called experience playback, or XP."
The rough idea was of a character doing illegal "runs", short in&out actions like "sneak into this facility, hack into the closed system and retrieve some data, then get back out. all while dealing with the guards" or something along those lines. The catch is though, that the character is kind of a "youtuber" who does live XPcasts of those runs. You know "feel the excitement! experience live the thrill of the hunt! I might even get killed by security and you experience it all first-hand, without any real danger to yourself because I'm the one taking all the REAL risk for you!".
Question is: do I need to give the character any special equipment, any special implants for the morph to do this right? Maybe anything that's not absolutely necessary to do it but would be logical to have since it improves the quality of such a cast or whatever?
EDIT: actually there is a second question to this I forgot about when posting the above:
How would I go about giving my character a second identity at character-creation? You know, he/she wouldn't want it to be open knowledge that they are "THAT person" when dealing with other people while not "on the job" so the "media-persona" would have to be a secret.
Welcome! These forums will be deactivated by the end of this year. The conversation continues in a new morph over on Discord! Please join us there for a more active conversation and the occasional opportunity to ask developers questions directly! Go to the PS+ Discord Server.

IIRC for High quality XP
IIRC for High quality XP production you need better gear and yes there is a hidden identity trait in the rule book. I'll try and look them up when i get home from work

Technically, I believe
Technically, I believe anybody can record and playback XP with just the Mesh Insert. Checking my notes, there's nothing particularly special in regards to XP in gear, other than for ease of use, you might want to stack Mnemonic Augmentation in to automatically record in the format. Since you're broadcasting, there's no need for a liferecorder. Sensory augmentations you add because they're useful to you might also improve the quality of the recording - but primarily it's going to come down to your Artistic and Professional skills.
AFAIK there's no complete trait to hide your identity, but traits like Information Control and Innocuous can impose penalties to checks to trying identify you in different circumstances. A surefire way would be to use an Anonymous Account or even Fake Ego ID for the "media persona"'s mesh presence, and then use systems like Skinflex or the Nanomask to obscure the identity of your Morph. Fake Ego ID means you'll have to assign rep to your different identities, though.

Anonymous Account Services
Anonymous Account Services are likely to be important to you, as well as falsifying morph ID nanotats and such.

Physical evidence can damn
Physical evidence can damn you too.
A dead switch will wipe your cortical stack and destroy it. If someone gets a hold of your ego, they'll probably be able to figure who you really are.
An emergency farcaster will destroy your morph and send an encrypted copy of your ego to some secure storage facility. With no morph or ego to analyze, it will be more difficult to figure out who you are.
Nanotat IDs is the Eclipse Phase form of ID cards. You might want to have it removed or faked, otherwise a quick scan will tell others who you are. Its found on your index fingers in case you didn't know.
You might want to pick up a QE comm (quantum entanglement) so your XP signal can't be jammed. You might want to carry one for high risk events.
You will also want some way to conceal the fact you bought or picked up those items. You might need a friend who can hack cameras and computers to erase where you've been and what you've done. And maybe find some security blind spots so you get more time to do stuff before security discovers you. If you are lucky, they won't discover you at all.
You also don't want to do the XP live. Few things can screw up an infiltration plan than having security watching you using cameras inside your skull.

I mean, if money's no object,
I mean, if money's no object, Panopticon has a laundry list of VERY expensive, typically illegal mods which will mess up almost any form of recognition people try and run on you, face, gait, biometric, nanotat ID... you can even install fake Brainprints.
However, concealing clothing (like the cloaks you'd want normally) and DNA Chaff are much more economical. Along with maybe a Lens Crazer or Dazzler.

I guess I'm beginning to
I guess I'm beginning to realize why I read comments elsewhere in this forum about how character creation is the most complicated part of the game and you should start using premade sample characters.
I kinda get a feeling I don't know enough to pull it off well yet.
Good thing there are sample characters included in the Quickstart PDF and also a lot more in other freely available books if I get a chance to play more than only the quickstart adventure!
Thank you guys for all your helpful suggestions!
There is just soooooo much in this game, so many options and all. I guess it can be a little overwhelming at first, especially if you don't have someone experienced in the group.

Don't worry too much about
Don't worry too much about inexperience. This setting is complex enough that it can give veterans a hard time. You might want to cut back on how much of the setting you use at once. Or even water down some of these aspects.
For newbies, I think these will be the hardest topics to grasp:
Panopticon - Society has cameras everywhere. Everything is being recorded. Every citizen, every corporate employee, every government agent has access to these cameras. No one really won the surveillance war. Privacy is a luxury. Voyeurism is a common hobby. While you shouldn't expect to be watched every moment of the day, you can't be sure that no one is watching you right now. And even if no one is watching, there is probably some AIs trying to catalog recordings of you in case someone wants to watch what you did earlier.
Muses, mesh inserts, programs: It is easy for new players to forget that most people have a computer in their head, software that automatically does work for them, and that they are always online. Its like having a cellphone but in their head. If an insect lands on you, getting more information about it is as thought intensive as making a mental mouse click. You talk to you muse and control your programs by using your thoughts. Only someone who is bad with computers will need to speak out loud to communicate with their muse. Much of what a person sees is altered by AR (Augmented Reality) where computers change the world you see, adding important information or even changing the environment (like making a rainy day seem sunny). Your muse and other programs can be reasonably smart and understand information and commands about as well as any human can. Your muse is probably your best tool, being like your personalized settings made smart and universal. It knows your preferences, music you like, what motivates you, etc and can configure any new software to fit your needs. This integration is so thorough that most transhumans will feel disorientated if they somehow lost access to these technologies.
Post Scarcity Economy: Its easy to forget that people in Eclipse Phase live in a post scarcity society. You can have anything you want... within reason. The needs of the masses is easily met. Food is plentiful. Housing can be built quickly. Luxuries isn't that difficult to make. The main reason why so many live in poverty despite the post scarcity economy is that transhumanity barely survived an extinction level event a decade ago. The means of production and habitable space hasn't caught up with the demand. The war before the fall destroyed a great deal of everything. Regardless, post scarcity means that you don't have to hoard goods. It is possible to ask a nanofabricator to make you something and get it made in a few hours. It also means that you can be beamed to another hab far away and quickly get the goods you want. To play a good character, you should try to find a balance between having good equipment to excel and knowing your minimal needs to be effective. Many habs will let you have whatever you need if you are willing to spend the credits for it, while others have their resources stretched so thin that they can't offer you much. To put it another way, a Reaper equipped to take on a small army would be expensive on the former and not possible in the latter. To have an effective combat character, you know how to do war using a flat or case and a 5,000 to 10,000 cr budget. That way, if you get a bigger budget and better morphs, you will do well.

Alternate identity Rep
The largest expenditure for an alternate/fake identity is probably going to be rep. In Eclipse Phase, everyone has a rep with someone, its the combined view that a society has about you.
In the mechanics this is represented as a single number, but really it would be a history of news stories, contacts vouching for you, and public works (from academic papers to Facebook posts). Its not money, its what other people think about you. Faking a rep score is hard, but buying it with your character points could represent an established cover.
You probably don't need a full array for a fake identity, but at least rep with the group the identity "belongs" to. In the OP's example f- and @-rep would be suitable.

I would have thought F and G
I would have thought F and G Rep maybe? Mainly F though since G could just as well be part of the "real" persona's rep.
Actually I'd say the rep situation of the "media persona" wouldn't be faked but like the "rep" a youtube-star built up. Except the "youtuber's" real identity is kept unknown here and therefore has different rep scores.
I guess I would either need stuff that lets the character disguise in whatever morph he/she is in OR maybe have different morphs to use for both personae. The latter would probably necessitate something that helps being able to use a morph to full capacity right after resleeving.

Well, that does bring up some
Well, that does bring up some interesting questions about how those alt. personas are created. For R rep, how is that created? Are you getting fake papers associated with review journals? Just buying a forum account on SciAm? And obviously, you couldnt get any Rep with the super secret conspiracies like Ozma or Firewall. The two easist reps to make fake rep to me would be G and A rep.
All the others to me, is quite the pickle what what actually happens.
That would be a great subject for a short story.

MrWigggles wrote:Well, that
Why R rep? And why fake any rep?
The actual character (in his/her real identity) would have rep as anyone else. The "media persona" would have only the rep built up in that identity. I dont see the need for anything fake here except disguising any links between the "media persona" identity and the "real" identity.
I might have gotten wrong what you said of course but I dont really understand your post...

Reputation mechanically, is
Reputation mechanically, is very abstracted and diluted. For you to actually have any kinda of social currency in any of the categorical social groups means that you have been active in those circles. The reason why folks would be willing to do you a favor, is because you're proven member of that social group. This means, doing grunt work, like being mod for forums, or being active person on various forums, or content producer. If you have R rep, this means that you are a notable, and or respected academic or a person with academic leanings. You might not do any OC research, but you could be a science reporter, you offer your services to help academics write grant papers, or perhaps you're a patron of the sciences themselves. ICLy, there no such thing as an aggregate Rep Score.
The reason why G and A rep to me, would be easiest to fake, is because for G rep, it would require paying off a few folks to 'vet' you, if you call out for a favor from the criminal underworld, and someone is able to do the favor, checks on you to see if you're worth the trouble and probably more importantly, pay back your debts. And do to the large mix of different A's out in the inky black, you can just literally buy Rep with extropians, or similar to G rep, get enough folks to back you up, when you get vetted.
Now the transfer of Rep to money, is fine with me, as there is a certain stability with activity in a social circle, and what good and services that entitles you to. You just compare to how much money this would cost in the old economies.
This does compound with the above issue though. How do you transfer that goodwill to someone else?

You mean between the character's two identities? Well, I don't.
The "youtube-star" identity would be a content producer and maybe active in forums and the likes itself. No need to transfer rep from the "real" identity or the other way round.
Its kinda like with the internet nowadays: people that know me in RL might not know about my interest for Eclipse Phase at all, therefore I wouldn't have any rep in the local circles of EP fans I might know in RL.
My internet-forum identity however can at the same time be very active here on the forums and build up rep with the international crowd of EP fans.
There is no connection (in terms of rep) between my "online identity" and my "real life identity" as long as I offer no way of finding out the two identities are in fact the same person.
Local EP fans could even be part of the international crowd of EP fans and know both identities and STILL have no means to connect the two as the same person so both would still have totally seperate rep-scores with them. All that without anything being faked.
