Names in Million Year Echo
G'Day, I have just run this mission for my players. One thing that came out of it that was a bit curious was the names of the people on the crew roster. There was no one named Mohammed. This was pretty strange. I was in Morocco in the late 90s. About 40% of the male population is named Mohammed. This is nothing exceptional in the rest of the moslem world from what I understand. With 7 males, I would expect 2-3 Mohammeds. Why were there none?

Mohammed is for better or
Mohammed is for better or worse a statistically proven stereotype of name. PS+ probly decided not to use it because of that reason

On the other hand, EP is set
On the other hand, EP is set well over 100 years in the future. In 1880 16% of US male babies were named either John or William, but now neither of those names break the .5% mark. A lot of name trends can change in that much time.

I looked through a list of
I looked through a list of typical Egyptian Arab given names and picked ones that I liked. Those baby name sites are your friends when you need to name to a whole roster of NPCs.

Yeah, name databases are
Yeah, name databases are crucial to the writing process, especially if you're going for something foreign. If I'm making up a language, I make up names. If I'm not, I look up names. It also comes down to players. It's difficult to keep track of fifteen NPC's with the same name, so unless you give them unique family names (which can be as common as first names), you're better off giving each a unique name/nickname/callsign/epithet/title, and first names have a lot more intimacy, which is a psychological aid.

Baby name sites are pretty
Baby name sites are pretty cool for EP--EP being a cosmopolitan setting. The complicated thing comes with figuring out full names. Baby name sites focus on given names, and also entire naming conventions can deviate quite a bit from the typical US "first name + dad's surname". I tend to research how to build a name on Wikipedia, then just reuse that name for multiple characters from the same culture. I've had multiple PCs named "Bashir ibn-Taleb Abdel Salam Al-Ashari" (Iraqi guy) or "Grace Dawo" (Kenyan lady). I guess I also use a lot of cyberpunk/William Gibson-esque names a lot. "Ziggy Lee". "Hennessy Mao". Etc. My present GM (/waves hi) has an NPC named "Hashtag Bakur", which amuses me, and also fits the W. Gibson-esque naming standard.
