Rose Colored Goggles
Does Eclipse Phase ever seem like its been filtered through a rather biased narrative? I've been researching Jante's Law, and honestly, it sounds fucking horrible, like just an awful way to live your life. Egalitarianism doesn't mean absolute equality, people still need a reason to achieve and stand out amongst their peers for their accomplishments. It seems to me like Nordic Countries make do with far less than they have to, which is odd, considering the weather would force most people to live indoors most of the time. I was really kind of down with the whole techno-socialist vibe for a while, but this, I dunno, it kind of threw me. In America, sometimes you see people dying in the streets, living like animals. But I don't think I'd want to live in a society where everybody behaves like they did in Ayn Rands "The Fountainhead" Of course, I could be misreading the situation, since I don't have any cultural context.

The way Jante's Law is
The way Jante's Law is described in Rimward is entirely in line with the way critics in the real world tend to describe the Jante's Law in Scandinavia. However, Jante's Law is neither an ideal people strive for nor an accurate description of the way things are. It's comparable to the way people point to the CCTV cameras in the UK and mumble about 1984 - it does not actually mean that the modern UK has become Oceania. Perhaps the Titanian Commonwealth truly works like the books describe it, but all in all the passage reads as the view of someone whose only heard about Scandinavian culture from people who don't like Scandinavian culture.

In theory, the EP solar system has somewhere else for you to go if you're not happy with the ideology in any one area. In practice, things get a little trickier. No habitat wants to bleed people if they can help it, and the ones who want to stick around will give people incentives to stay and disincentives to leave. Rep, credit, memes, hope, fear, outright force: all on the table.
