Something I was reading that I wrote earlier reminded me of something that happened very early on in my campaign.
Basically, the group were largely newbies to Firewall, and had been charged with a support mission - tracking down Violet Perdido in Elysium, as she'd gone missing.
Through Investigation, investigation, and some hamhanded indenture liberation-at-gunpoint, my players determined that Violet had run afoul of the local Shui Fong, who were likely holding her ego in their Jade Dragon Inn downtown, a combination black market, capsule and regular hotel, brothel, darkcaster, and black kettle.
Why yes, putting most of your eggs in a single basket is a brilliant idea, why do you ask?
Anyway, my players decided that this whole setup was a gigantic bag of dicks, so they decided to not only liberate Violet, but cover it up by liberating every single indentured person there. To this end, they recruited a group of Scum from the Get Your Ass to Mars Swarm (which was passing by,) who didn't fear getting blacklisted on c-net and arrest warrants issued in consortium space if it meant a huge bump in @-Rep and a lot of indentures got freed along with maybe some resources for the Swarm.
Jake Carter, whom this group had already been giving a headache, decided that he didn't have many better options.
He just gave them the following instructions:
[ ] Don't start a firefight in the streets.
[ ] Don't make the news.
[ ] Don't burn down Chinatown.
And then my players proceeded to basically treat this as a checklist of things to do rather than mission failures. They started a gunfight after a botched Pilot: Groundcraft roll T-boned a Triad panel van into the doors of the hotel, preventing their big mining truck from barging right in. They sent their scummers over the top, shooting out the windows above the lobby doors and leading with grenades (one of which was an incindiary), while they rammed the van out of the way so they could drive in, in the process knocking the rear door open and revealing its contents - one Arachnoid, tied down and unsleeved. Then they let their Scum loose with the firebombing, and after said Scummer found a flamethrower in the black market, let all hell break loose to cover their forced indenture liberation and thieving, all the while the machine gun on the truck itself fired into the lobby, preventing Triad reinforcements from ascending or descending.
And amazingly, this worked out, because although they literally violated all of their direct instructions, the Scum gleefully took credit for everything, thus preserving Firewall opsec.
