So I wrote a short story in college about the discovery of an alien artifact during the establishment of the first permanent base on Mars. The story was kind of inspired by Eclipse Phase and I would like to do an adventure based on the object.
The Maker
The Maker is a perfect 3 m x 3 m x 3 m cube of an unknown gray metal that is covered all around in a membrane of a cellular gel. This gel acts as the interface system for the cube as the gel extends outward from the cube and combines with the user's nervous system. The Maker is by all accounts, a TITAN's personal factory, capable of producing anything that the user requests of it, expelled from the cube in a manner similar to cellular exocitosis. The Maker requires no additional resources or materials to produce an object, only a request from a user. A couple have been found in the TQZ and can even be used by transhumans. Through trial and error, there have been several rules to using the Makers.
1. The user must request an object when interfacing with a Maker.
2. The user must know how the requested object is to be used and function. Only one object can be requested at a time and it must physically exist in the world.
3. If a user possesses intimate details of the object's inner workings than those details are put into the object. Otherwise, the Maker substitutes these details, usually with alien technology. For example, if a person wants to make a specific brand of ecto using the Maker, he can even though he doesn't know how an ecto works. The Maker will produce the ecto which will outwardly looks like the requested ecto and functions like an ecto even though the inside contains only a solid-state circuit made of computronium wired into the inputs and outputs.
4. The Maker copies the Ego of each user and stores it. The specific Ego can be loaded into a morph the Maker produces if requested. If an Ego that is not stored in the Maker is requested, the Maker loads in an altered version of a randomly selected Ego best suited for the request.
5. Biological bodies and organisms can be requested though an Ego will be loaded into the organism if it is a complete organism.
6. Certain items cannot be requested, usually these items are other Makers, Pandora Gates, or other such fantastic items. Exsurgent Egos cannot be requested by the user. This may be due to a kind of DRM against transhuman Egos using the device.
Because of their nature and rarity, they are often heavily fought for by nomads, Oversight, Firewall, and even exsurgents. Oddly there are no obvious ill effects from using the Makers. As to whether something horrible will appear later, well who knows what that TITANs could have up their sleeve?
So what does everyone think of this artifact?

Well, yeah. Violating fundamental laws of physics is kind of common for TITAN artifacts.

Not that fundamental. The
Not that fundamental. The TITANs didn't conjure their armies out of nothing, they needed swarms of nanites to build them out of what was to-hand.

Yeesh.
In a word? Broken.
Okay, a couple of thoughts.
This is certainly interesting, but makes more sense as an alien artifact than a TITAN one due to the resource bit - a fractal is the level of manufacturing capability that the TITANs muster.
The idea of a TITAN having a "personal" item is also a bit off - they're computer programs. If they want something made, they task it's creation to that part of themselves that's inhabiting something with manufacturing capabilities.
More vitally, this isn't the sort of thing that would just be owned by an individual, this is the sort of thing that would spark off an all-out system-wide war.
Screw individual items, get one of these things and you can just mass-produce the most rare and valuable elements you need - the faction/hab that controls it instantly becomes the economic powerhouse of the solarsystem.
No group could possibly tolerate it being possessed by any other, as they would be utterly out-competed on every level. For the same reason, every group is going to try and claim it for themselves.
In other words, this is exactly the sort of thing you could base an extremely interesting, long term campaign around.
Kudos!

In the past we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few.
But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again?

You could make it not violate
You could make it not violate conservation of mass-energy by having it require matter, any matter, to produce its output. Just feed it equivalent mass. Want Uranium 235? Feed it 235 times that much hydrogen. Or just feed it dirt.

That's a great idea. The
That's a great idea. The device is still something all the different factions are going to fight over and Firewall is going to try to destroy, but there is still a limiting factor to it's use.
Not to mention it let's the GM create these great descriptions of the cellular gel absorbing everything around it as it produces the requested items.

Now that I've been rethinking
Now that I've been rethinking the need for mass, I was thinking that the cube could get non-users to provide mass through a YGBM hack or that it has a bunch of slaved bots/exsurgents that solely exist to provide matter for it when nobody is watching. Or that when it makes things, the cube sinks a quarter of a meter into the ground and several liters of atmosphere are missing.
I was thinking that this would be more of a mini-campaign of two or three sessions mainly because I thought the temptation to "nuke it from orbit" would just end the campaign.

You're still violating conservation of energy. It takes a lot of energy to convert 235 atoms of hydrogen into one atom of U-235. That energy has to come from somewhere, and if it doesn't come from anywhere discernible... Then you're not talking about a TITAN artifact, you're talking about an ETI artifact.

Definitely a scary thing,
Definitely a scary thing, more in line with ETI or generally xenotech stuff. Like the GIZA black box artifacts, only a million times worse. Firewall would nuke it to death IMMEDIATELY, super dangerous.
May need to use it for my own scenarios though, very scary, very compelling stuff. Awesome stuff!

A little of topic, but who cares :P
Urg, I'm not a fan of the idea of ETI artifacts.
Well, I am, but in my mind ETI artifacts are everwhere: we call them "Pulsars" or "Black Holes". Similarly, we call ETI manufacturing plants "Nebulae", and it's weapons "Standard Candles".
So, yeah, alien, not ETI.
Remember, just because you can't see where it's getting the mass/energy from, doesn't mean it's sourceless.
Insert Maniacal Laugh Here :D

Making it related to Pandora
Making it related to Pandora Gate technology could overcome the conservation rules...kind of a "white hole" version of a gate.
Make it dramatic too! You have to stick your hand into the white sphere, visualize what you want , and hope you get it!

here is a way if corny around
here is a way if corny around the mass energy problem. a microsingularity for the mass and energy required. use the gravitational energy as a power source and use it against th singularity to siphon the matter off. however this would definitely throw it into the ETI category.
