Best Books for a starting game
I'm new to EP but I really like it! I would like to know what books beyond the Core Rules you feel is important to have. I'm looking for something that you feel is ESSENTIAL and with important information not covered in the main book. Transhuman is an obvious choice for me but, thus far, is only a pdf while I (and my group) prefer to read physical, old books. Panopticon sounds interesting...but I almost feel that I could do with habitats & uplifts just with what is in the Core Rule....or am I wrong? Sunward sounds like a great choice but I feel it misses something without Rimward....and having Rimward without Sunward sounds even odder. Gatecrashing sounds also nice, but not so sure if I'll need it because I'm not so sure if I like or not exoplanets. So, excluding Transhuman, what books you suggest to buy and why?

This is kind of one of those
This is kind of one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions, I think, because it's really up to you. The main question is how much of a 'slave' to the canon setting do you want to be and how much of a stickler for fine detail are you and your friends? If you're the GM, how much do you like 'writing' the setting as opposed to reading it from a book? You can run a perfectly fine game using just the setting information in the core book. It has enough rules and the essential setting information to have a game work basically anywhere except maybe the Jovian Republic, which only mostly becomes a semi-plausible society if you have Rimward. Sunward and Rimward just expand on what's already there for the most part. I've not gotten around to reading Panopticon yet but so far what I've found is Sunward and Rimward are both really good - they've come in useful for the game I'm currently running which went from the Main Belt (Rimward) to Mars (Sunward) over the last few sessions. They have tons of setting information that you'll probably find useful. I probably wouldn't have needed either if I had more free time to write the sessions, but since I'm working full-time as well as being a GM, having the books to help was definitely welcome. Gatecrashing is something I'm still working through and it's quite different from the other books in terms of structure because of how specialized it is in comparison to a book like Sunward which covers basically everything outside of the Inner System. You'd only need Gatecrashing (and again, need is a relative term here) if your game was centered around gatecrashing or at least was planned to heavily feature it. Otherwise, it's not going to be at all important, at least from what I've read of it so far. I'm kind of with you in that I can take or leave exoplanets for the most part. Anyway, that's my take on it.

The Eclipse Phase Core
The Eclipse Phase Core Rulebook is the only "essential" book. If you are like me, and you have major problems with point buy character creation games, then Transhuman is also an "essential" book. No other book is "essential." However, each comes with a wealth of very helpful information. If you can afford them, I would say buy all of the books. I have. I don't regret it for a second. If not, then buy books based on what type of setting you plan to run. Will you run a gatecrashing game? Will your game take place in the inner system? Will It take place in the outer system? Will your game really focus on the Mesh/on life in a habitat? Based on the way you answer those question, you have the answers you need...

Where are you going to base
Where are you going to base your game? If Lunar then get Sunward If Titan or the Jovians then get Rinward If on an exoplanet with lots of gatecrashing, then Gatecrashing. Thats what Ive done..

As jasonbrisbane said. Get the core book + either Sunward or Rimward depending on where you are going to base your campaign. I see Transhuman as optional, it doesn't really add anything to the setting and making characters with just the core book works just fine. Although most time-consuming it allows for a lot of freedom in creation. If you plan to create characters from the core book only, then get the Excel character generator, it helps a lot. https://sites.google.com/site/eclipsephases/home/cabinet

I think panopticon is the
I think panopticon is the most important. It includes a lot of information on the mesh (which is everywhere) and how you can deal with clandestine activities while under constant surveillance. Gate crashing is something at least the GM should look at if you’re going to do any gate crashing the way the ops are run is well thought out. But no need to look at it until you’re starting to plan that. Sunward and Rimward are mostly valuable for setting detail. A good read but not essential unless your pore at creating location descriptions yourself. Transhuman is good but not needed. A lot of it is advice to players rather than new rules.
