Technically, Liftport was a space elevator company, but it feel on bad economic times like so many other companies during the economic crash a few years back. However, many of the people involved never lost their enthusiasm and managed to keep the dream alive by making it something of a hobbyist project. Their starting goal is to create a cable tied to weather balloons, and have a robot climb it. Aside from getting back into gear, they believe can make these "towers" to serve as ad-hoc communication towers capable of handling cell phone communication, or carry other kinds of gears like infra-red cameras. They believe that such technologies would be helpful in the after math of a disaster. They plan to use such projects as stepping stones to work their way to making a space elevator. One of their big goals is to try to make a space elevator on the moon, since the moon lacks many of the factors that would add additional stress on such a structure. Such stresses include strong gravity to give it a strong tug on the cabble or an atmosphere to blow the structure around. Unfortunately, I only came to notice this kickstarter project recently (I need to find these things sooner), so you have like only 24 hours to join in on this project (at the time of writing). But don't feel rushed to join in before you are ready. They said they don't expect to get the money to build a space elevator on the first kickstarter project, so instead they plan to have many kickstarter projects and opportunities for people to get involved. In many ways, this project is as much funding as getting their name out there, so you can help by spreading the word. My suggestion is to keep a watchful eye on this company, and do some research.
