Any tricks to creating a sneak up behind them and kill them with a knife type character?
Hello. I am just curious, as I don't know this game's rules very well (I love the lore, own all the books, but have not had a chance to actually play a game as of yet. I just don't have a head for rules unless I am actually using them at a table), how would one go about maximizing their character's effectiveness at sneaking up behind someone and killing their sleeve as fast as possible with a knife (Spec-Op style). Right off the bat it seems to me that infiltration, blades, somatics, coordination, and a wasp blade are musts. Are there any other tricks to make this style of combat more effective?

Either have a morph with Chameleon Skin, or have clothing with the similar option... or better yet, both! An invisibility cloak would also come in handy, if you can swing the price. Grip Pads are another useful biomod, since it helps you attack from unexpected angles, particularly in gravity. And Enhanced Senses can let you see where others cannot. There's other mods and gear that would help as well, but that starts going into stuff for a generally-effective combat character, and I'll let others cover that.

Also; if you want to do it more than once in a career, be a hacker. Because you'll need to suppress the victim's muse from screaming bloody murder on the mesh. It's actually really hard to kill someone with a single melee attack in EP. the wasp knife with the right poison will help but to make that work you'll need some way of procuring the poison. High G-Rep and networking, or Fabber prints and access to "open" fabbers. (another reason to be a hacker) To stack up the damage: use a synthmorph with a pneumatic limb (+1d10 damage) and ambidexterity for a two handed attack (+1d10 damage) If your GM allows it you could use a biomorph with a cyber arm and pneumatic limb. You want to try to get a MoS of 30+ so you can add an extra 5 points to damage. With an excellent success, potentially, you could do 3d10+11 damage. That's a minimum of 14 damage which will not kill any morph but will Double Wound anything with a DUR of 35 or less, causing them to make a WILL x 3 test to remain conscious while you finish the job. Still need a hacker or skills to suppress the muse and surveillance while you work.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

It might be a better choice to use something more subtle in lethality than a knife in 10 AF. The problem is that spimes and wireless connectivity makes it near-impossible to slice a throat without a warning or recording hitting the mesh. Your best bet is to do something that is subtle enough not to be caught by cameras, and not to be immediately detected by the user or their muse. I'd recommend nanotoxins and psi abilities as the new assassin tools of the transhuman age. Subtly infect your target with a toxin or sleight without them noticing, and wait until it tears up their body in whatever way they are programmed for. A sleight might convince your target to commit suicide, or be in the ambush point at the right time with their mesh inserts inactive.
Transhumans will one day be the Luddites of the posthuman age. Help me get my gaming fix, if you want.

Alternately, building on what OneTrikPony said, you can befriend an amoral infomorph hacker and have him or her ride around in a Ghostrider module, and let them take care of the hacking. It's what two of the PCs in my Eclipse Phase game do (although they prefer a silenced sniper rifle to a knife).

While it can be expensive with the level of augmentations this group is talking about, a disposeable morph or bot (that you are either sleeved in or jamming) would be a way to kill and get away with it. Stabbing someone in the back with a normal knife is just an inferior strategy in this age. Knives are what you use when you can't get a gun (or a gun with a silencer if you need to be quiet). But yeah, I understand if you're going for a theme, just don't expect a crazy sneak attack game-breaking combo that makes a standard knife more powerful than high tech firepower. Even as a knife-fighter, your gear is where you will get most of your power (implants, poisons, nanotoxins, etc.)

Palming, Disguise, Deception, Impersonation are excellent skills for getting close and not revealing your identity. Skinflex, fake IDs, and tricks like gait masking from Panopticon works well too. Iff you truly get the jump on your target, you shouldn't need anything for damage roll. Someone skilled with a knife stabbing someone in the heart from behind shouldn't have a harder time than shooting someone in the head, and I wouldn't roll damage for that either. Of he doesn't spot you, only armor could save him (or rather his heart or throat, implants can keep a biomorph functioning without it). For knifes to work in actual combat, high Moxie for buying armor defeating crits and getting excellent successes is probably a good idea. A campaign with security scans and fabber restrictions that keeps better weapons rare would also belp ;)

Re: Any tricks to creating a sneak up behind them and kill ...
If you sink a knife into someone's neck from behind and sever the nerves running down their spine, you will paralyze them (and cause them to stop breathing). Cutting someone's neck will kill them in a matter of seconds. The rooms are inadequate for modeling this with the standard attack/damage rules, but I'd let a player work for it. If you can successfully sneak up on someone, I'd allow an attack at a penalty (say -20 or so), on which, if they succeed with a reasonable MoS, they kill or paralyze the target instantly. That doesn't mean you won't be spotted, though. Pretty much everyone in Eclipse Phase has transmitters, there's cameras everywhere, likely monitoring AIs, etc. The more valuable an area, the higher the security and the harder it will be to bypass it. In an area with minimal security, a bag that blocks transmissions over the target's head will suffice. As things get more complex, you might need to have a hacker intercept their signals and spoof their transmissions to a patrol monitoring AI and send a little robot to maintain their path. You'll need to hack spimes to disable them, or lure the target into a camera blindspot, as well as find some way to dispose of the body. It's also worth noting that, in all but the most security-conscious facilities, spimes will largely just be for monitoring things like air-quality. They'll have cameras to monitor particularly secure areas. This also all suggests you're infiltrating some sort of established complex and, all in all, a sneaky person has far less to worry about when, say, infiltrating an unsecure location, acting as a counter-infiltrator, or going into somewhere not so well secured, like a camp in the Martian desert or on an exoplanet.
