Open source village
root@Open source village [hr] http://opensourceecology.org/gvcs.php Ran across an interesting site where mechanical engineers came up with a list of items that would allow a village to be self-sufficient, and they are working on open source designs for each item. I'm strongly reminded of the Argonauts and open source designers from the Rim. It also brings to mind the question of what this list would look like if it was developed by chemical engineers, or electrical engineers, or any other group.

root@Open source villiage [hr] I attention skipped off the heavy text, but that looked like an open source electronic voting machine? That may be something I have to introduce my professor to. What makes it better than the current, ah, "technology"?

Not only that, but a free-as-in-Stallman archive consisting of all of the information necessary to bootstrap a village into self-sufficiency, including a K-12 education programme and reference texts.
