Re-sleeving quandries
Hello, new to Eclipse Phase (as my other post states) but I am trying to learn it from the book since no one here plays it. I have a few questions about Re-sleeving and I'm having trouble parsing the book. 1) It says if you critically fail on your Integration roll in Re-sleeving, that you suffer a -30 to all physical skills with that morph UNTIL YOU RE-SLEEVE! Isn't that . . . um, pretty harsh? I mean, you critically succeed, you gain 1 temporary moxie usable that session only, you fail, you are essentially out of commission until you can rack up another 40,000 credits for a new fury morph? I mean, come on, that's . . . that's really harsh isn't it? Listen, I get it, make critical failures bad, sure, but really, how do you go from "awkward for a few days" (failing by 30 or more) to "Morph is useless for all time." And sure, I know you can use Moxie to degrade it to a 'normal' failure, but what if you are trying to save your moxie so you don't go insane from continuity problems? Seems pretty harsh is all I'm saying. 2)Backup insurance only covers being turned into an infomorph, right? So if you are, say, killed on the first mission, then you are essentially done as a character? I mean, you won't have the money to even buy a flat, and you may not even have enough money to buy a case. So unless your character can earn money as an informorph . . . you're done, right? 3)Stress from Morphing: Okay, so you can, or probably will, suffer stress from re-sleeving. Shouldn't re-sleeving come with mandatory counciling then? I mean, you can get rid of stress points at a rate of 1 per HOUR (depending on how crazy you are and how good your shrink is), so sitting down for 8 hours would probably get rid of all your stress. Why wouldn't anyone do that? Heck, just plug them into an AI counciler and have it talk to them for a few days and you'd be fine, even if you died in a violent way and remembered everything. 4) You you AUTOMATICALLY suffer stress if you are a fork, or only if you know? Like, if someone forks you without your knowledge, you suffer the +2 Stress points for not knowing if you died, but do you suffer an additional +2 by virtue of the fact that you are a fork?

Re: Re-sleeving quandries
1) The book doesn't say you need a new body. All it says is to resleeve. We took that as meaning you have to go through the resleeving process again because the first round failed. Doesn't say you can't sleeve right back into the same body after cooling off as an infomorph or something for a few minutes. 2) That's what favors are for. Call in a big one to get a new body and expect to have to pay it back by doing something of equal or greater value. Also as far as I can tell from the fluff Firewall provides bodies but they may not always be up to your personal specs as the beginning fiction points out with the narrator being sleeved in a beaten up Fury. 3) Looks like you get a +2 in general for being a fork. Anything else is extra.

Re: Re-sleeving quandries
Question one has been answered nicely, but I think I should throw in my two cents on the other three. 2. Back-up insurance CAN cover a body, but it usually doesn't, no. That said, if players are working for Firewall, Firewall agrees to resleeve them if they die on a mission. The same is probably true of most other organizations, like hypercorps, except for really small ones. If you feel like allowing it, I recommend allowing players to buy clones (or blueprints, if a synth). That way, players can even use the same sleeve, if they have a favoured design. 3. Resleeving stress is from simple things, like the person you see in the mirror not match the face there the other day, or your arms not being as long as you remember them. It's the sort of thing you get used to and don't really need therapy for. It's like getting used to moving to a new city; stressful, sure, but unless you're already under a lot of psychological pressure, it's not going to kill you. 4. The Fork stress is related to continuity stress, so I'd say you have to know it for it to affect you. The stress is derived from reinstantiating and seeing yourself waiting there. After all, remember that all back-ups are forks; they're only called forks, though, if the original is still alive.

Don't forget that literally everyone has a Muse trained in counseling. :) You can get Stress from… everything, in EP; take a look at the list sometime. You *do* get Stress from backups, though. It's part of the Continuity mechanic, IIRC.

Actually, according to the description on page 330, it does include a morph. It does not specify same type or the value however. I would imagine that unless your job/habitat requires a specialized morph, it would usually be a Splicer, maybe an Exalted. I would guess a Synth or a Pod if you have the cheaper insurance.

Your morph is still good. A savvy character will find a way to arrange a swap with someone else when a body doesn't agree with them (and yes, I would hold that *that* body doesn't agree with them.) Morphs do not lose 30% of their value when walked off the lot, unless they have planned obsolescence.

As others have said, usually Firewall will find something to stick you in, depending on how well you did on the mission your proxy might be generous with the discretionary resources. If you completely blew the mission and your proxy is mad at you, however, you could end up having to use rep favors to cover it, get a loan from another character, or even have another character get a ghostrider module installed so you can ride along (assuming you happen to be decent at mental actions like infosec this might not be a bad idea at all.
