Character Preview: Mercurial Scavenger

"Maybe it's the kind of trap that would catch a knuckle-dragging monkey, but my superior physiology was able to easily squeeze out of it."
Who's got eight arms, demolitions training, and an ink sac full of anger for the hairless apes that wrecked his ancestral world?  This guy.

We bring you the first sample character preview for Eclipse Phase.  You can view the sheet as a downloadable .jpg by clicking the link below.

How unusual...
I must admit, I was expecting the first of these character previews to be examples of transhumanity, something more easily relatable to. Heh. Though I think starting with something as unusual as this really does start to show the breadth of things that EP characters can be. Not sure what I think about the concept of playing a sentient octpus... but I hope that all the other sample characters are just as interesting as this guy. :)

I've heard the term
I've heard the term "Mercurial" before... Does that apply specifically to an all-uplift or all octopus uplift faction? Or is a "mercurial" something else and this is an uplift that is part of the faction? Love that you kept the ink spray btw... I can see "spiking" it with all sorts of nastiness...

The term "mercurials" is

The term "mercurials" is used to refer to the non-human branches of the transhuman family tree: uplifts and infolife (AGIs).

Outstanding!
Great artwork. I love Octomorphs, it would seriously be one of the coolest new bodies to try out. Seriously psyched for this game!

Loved the Gear section too...
Loved the Gear section too... Doesn't sound like you raided a generic SF toolshed, sounds like the stuff I've read in some Transhuman yarns. Am I correct that "backup insurance" is the character's stored mind that some benefactor has ready to reload and resleeve? And if so what does the time limit represent? That our octopoid friend has himself backed up for a month then he has to pay additional fees? Or does that mean that if the group holding his stored copy doesn't hear from him in a month they assume he's dead or otherwise gone and initiate his backup?

Thought: it may be useful to add a note saying the attachment won't be visible unless you register and login to the site. Prior to registering, I was briefly confused by the reference to "the link below" when there was no link in evidence save by inference.

Thanks for the heads up, I
Thanks for the heads up, I think we've got it cleared up now so that anyone can access the downloadable content.

Rep
Actually, I'm curious about he Rep section. Reputation of different sorts, I assume. What do the different sections mean?
GregH GregH's picture
Different general factions
Different general factions perhaps?

They represent different
They represent different social networks. @-rep is the A-List, for the various autonomist factions. c-rep is CivicNet, for the various hypercorp/inner system factions. g-rep is Guanxi, the socnet used by criminal types. And so on :) There are 7 socnets used in the game, though you could create others.

Yeah, everyone starts off

Yeah, everyone starts off with 1-month of backup insurance for free. If you want more you have to spend cred or exercise your rep.

General backup insurance policies will resleeve you from your cortical stack (if available) or your stored backup (if not) in case of your proven death, or if you go missing for some set period (usually 6 months).

What happens if you don't
What happens if you don't make next month's payment? Does your stored persona get deleted?
kylleran kylleran's picture
It probably depends on who
It probably depends on who you're contracted through, the more bottom line profit driven storage outfits will probably delete your ass no problem, after all if you can't pay there are plenty of other potential customers who can. Smaller outfits or places where you might have a rep with them may extend you a credit, issue warnings, but basically cut you some slack.

Usage?
Interesting. Thanks for the answer, Rob. Can I assume that that there are very clear ideas and guidelines for using those Reputations in rules terms (such as acquiring services, gaining recognition, etc)?
RobBoyle RobBoyle's picture
Yep, there's a system for it.
Yep, there's a system for it. It essentially involves using the appropriate Networking skill, with your Rep in that socnet applying modifiers (in relation to the level of the favor) and determining how often you can use Rep for that purpose before you have to start burning it. (If you ask for too many favors in too short a period, your rep goes down because you're a pest.)
